Brief Description
The Works Delivery Internal Design Team (IDT) provide in-house design services to the Work Delivery Civils Contractor. We operate over the Northwest and Central Region which extends from London Euston up to Gretna Green on the Scottish border. Our base is in Heaton Mersey in South Manchester. The team currently has 15 members of staff.
We undertake a wide variety of projects including:
1. Bridge and Footbridge Design
2. Bridge Maintenance and Strengthening
3. Design of Retaining Structures
4. Platform Extensions
5. Scour Protection
6. Culvert Lining and Replacement
7. Tunnel Maintenance and Strengthening
8. Embankment and Cutting Stabilisation
9. Lineside Structures
We work closely with the Works Delivery Contractor and see projects from inception to completion. We visit the site to help the contractor with any site queries. We have won a number of design awards including Winner of Infrastructure Project of the Year at the 2023 National Rail Awards. We welcome innovation in design and use laser scanning, photogrammetry, 3D printing, and FE analysis to work more efficiently.
About the role (External)
What will you be doing?
As a senior design engineer, your responsibilities are as follows:
1. Manage the development remit for a proposal so that it properly describes the engineering requirements, scope, possibilities, and operational performance targets while maintaining a robust challenge to sponsoring engineers and managers.
2. Manage all engineering and development activities to ensure they result in schemes that are affordable and meet programme requirements in a safe & environmentally responsible manner for time, cost, and quality.
3. Manage (or undertake where applicable) the development of suitable engineering options for a proposal, giving full consideration to safety, reliability, operational capacity modelling, maintainability, ease of construction, and environmental/whole life issues.
4. Confirm whether strict change control is maintained on scope development; evaluate cost, time, and performance impacts in conjunction with development management.
5. Participate in the selection of a single option for further development, preparing or monitoring preparation of reports, papers, etc. as necessary.
6. Manage (or undertake where applicable) the preparation of the full engineering data package required for commencement of the detailed design.
7. Support the construction design management (CDM) planning supervisor in all associated duties.
8. Carry out independent checking of safety-critical documentation.
9. Manage adequate resourcing of the feasibility stages of project development.
10. Manage the engineering interfaces of allocated proposals with concurrent work in other disciplines.
11. Act as or liaise with the appropriate Project Engineer during stages 2-4.
12. Monitor, assess, evaluate, and audit Consultants and Contractors during project stages 2-4.
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
1. An engineering degree or equivalent industry-recognised training qualification.
2. IRSE Principles Designer licence or equivalent relevant to the discipline.
3. A demonstrable aptitude for option development.
4. Strong evaluation and decision-making skills.
5. A working knowledge of rail engineering; relevant successful experience working in the principal discipline and an adequate understanding of all other related disciplines.
6. An ability to work and communicate effectively in a team context.
7. An appreciation of all the life cycle stages of rail infrastructure.
8. CDM, Auditing, and risk assessment competencies.
It's not mandatory to have the below, but it would be desirable to have:
1. 5 years' relevant post-graduate experience of producing Civil Engineering designs.
2. Experience of acting as CRE on Civils Schemes.
3. An excellent command of written and spoken English.
4. Excellent report writing skills.
5. Ability to produce Programmes and Estimates.
6. Client liaison skills.
7. Liaison with our internal Contractor.
8. Be able to manage, mentor and develop a small team of Engineers and Draughtsmen.
9. PTS card.
10. A friendly and professional demeanour.
11. IEng or CEng Accreditation or close to attaining Accreditation.
12. Rail Experience in design, installation, and maintenance.
13. Formal qualifications in risk identification and assessment.
The successful applicant will be expected to spend a minimum of 3 days a week in the office as the role will involve mentoring junior members of the team.
