Job Responsibilities
1. When new cohorts of students commence their training, welcome them and provide a localised induction to Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and our maternity services.
2. Have regular contact with all T-level students/Apprentice students, Midwifery and MSc students by both frequently visiting them in their clinical placement areas, running drop-ins and arranging various group sessions.
3. Facilitate local teaching sessions for students as requested by the students and identified as required by the midwifery team, practice development and risk management team.
4. Involve Students in maternity education and learning opportunities such as risk management meetings and training sessions.
5. Work closely with the practice development team and support teaching on maternity mandatory training days which will include facilitating training to students on the training days.
6. Facilitate local simulation training and support students to assist teaching working on the principle that teaching strengthens learning.
7. Alongside the Recruitment and Retention Midwife facilitate Taster Days for people interested in pursuing a career in midwifery.
8. Maintain the Practice Supervisor and Practice Assessor database and support Midwives once they have completed the preceptorship programme to access and complete appropriate and relevant SSSA training in a timely manner.
9. Provide responsive support for Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors.
10. Provide mandatory updates on the maternity mandatory day about supervision and assessment of students.
11. In the incidence a student is failing provide presence and support to the Student, Practice Assessor and Academic Supervisor through this process and complete relevant documentation and action plans.
12. Support the clinical leads with timely off duty for students that ensures an optimal balance of continuity and variation of Practice Supervisors.
13. Coordinate allocation of Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors.
14. Review student placement feedback and respond accordingly.
15. Support the recruitment process of Midwives.
16. Support the practice development team and newly qualified midwives during the initial preceptorship period following qualification to ensure a smooth transition from student to midwife.
17. Ensuring placement capacity in clinical area is well utilised and maximised but not exceeded. Lead with forming relationships with new academic partnerships.
Leadership and Management
1. Work with clinical staff at all levels, other organisations in the health community and placement staff within Higher Education institutions, to ensure high quality clinical placements that provide learners with positive and appropriate clinical experiences across the duration of their pre-registration midwifery programme.
2. Contribute to a positive culture, demonstrating effective professional attitudes and behaviours internally and external to the Trust, to enable continuous quality and service improvement, and maintain good working relationships.
3. Advise, develop and ensure quality of learning opportunities within a multi-professional framework in order that the service users receive a high standard of care.
4. Advise and support practice staff who have failing or challenging learners or difficult practice situations.
5. Develop, embed and maintain coaching (collaborative learning in practice placement) experience models to support learners in the workplace; encourage innovative approaches to enhance student learning experience to enable attainment of competency and proficiency.
6. Implement learning interventions and actively monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions in the workplace that enhance the students placement experience.
Education and Training
1. Facilitate regular learning sessions for midwifery students also incorporating a CLIP and a learn by teaching type approach whereby with your guidance senior students facilitate sessions for junior students.
2. Supporting clinical staff in the implementation of NMC Education and Practice Supervision and Assessment standards in clinical areas, facilitating uptake at ward level and ensuring within the midwifery preceptorship period newly qualified Midwives are supported to do their training.
3. Support Practice Supervisors and Practice Assessors to support their teaching and assessment skills and develop their confidence.
4. Design and deliver training sessions and comprehensive presentations to staff and students across the Trust, promoting evidenced based practice and assisting in the development of new and improved practices.
5. Ensure comprehensive evaluation of content, methods of delivery and impact occurs which informs subsequent delivery.
6. Ensure practice educators are educated and developed to support midwifery learners in practice.
7. Ensure sufficient, suitably prepared practice educators are available to support practice learning and maintain an up to date data register for the organisation which reflects the needs of the learner numbers and placements.
8. Work with academic colleagues from higher and further education providing training (such as mandatory updates) and practice support to ensure registered practitioners are supported to act as appropriate practice educators to midwifery students.
9. Undertake all mandatory training.
