Working in a supportive cardiothoracic surgery department with a strong focus on developing surgical skills to CST level Expected to reach competency in vein harvest, sternotomy, thoracotomy and minor thoracic surgery procedures in this very busy department.
The successful candidate will be exposed to emergency as well as elective cardiothoracic surgery procedures, including endoscopic vein harvesting, major aortic surgery, VATS lobectomies and other highly specialised work.
Exposure to general cardiothoracic surgery plus transplant (opportunity to join our retrieval team), advanced cardiorespiratory support devices (LVAD/ECMO), aortic surgery and minimally invasive thoracic surgery. Our department has a strong emphasis on research and service improvement (recent clinical fellows have earned 1st author national and international presentations and led on service improvement projects). Wythenshawe has a cutting edge, dynamic cardiothoracic surgery and heart and lung transplant department with 8 cardiac and 5 thoracic surgeons, 2 associate specialists, 10 registrars, 3 deanery core trainees and 3 clinical fellows. Supported by ANPs and Specialist Thoracic and Cardiac Nurses. Candidates must have, or be eligible for, GMC registration that allows them to work in posts that are not recognised for training.
Most of the commitments are at Wythenshawe Hospital but the post holder may be required to assist his/her Consultant at some satellite clinics. The job will cover ward, theatre and clinic duties. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the on call rota.
