''Creating a great place to be cared for and a great place to work''
University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay has a firm commitment to strengthening the diversity of our workforce, and therefore welcomes and encourages applications from likeminded people who can support our ambition to become effortlessly inclusive. We are particularly keen to hear from protected groups – including BAME, LGBT+ and people with a disability.
Job overview
The Morecambe Bay Respiratory Network in conjunction with the Community Respiratory Service has secured funding until April 2026 to trial a number of new services across Morecambe Bay, including a new service for people with respiratory disease living with high symptom burden who are at high risk of deterioration and urgent care use.
This role offers you a permanent contract with our Trust (UHMBT), aligned with the Community Respiratory Service until 31st March 2026. Further funding for us to continue these Respiratory services beyond April 2026 will be dependent on the success of this trial period.
This role of Respiratory Occupational Therapist will specifically support our new small specialist 'Complex/Advanced Respiratory Care at Home team'. This team comprises MDT members including: Consultant, Nurse, Senior OT, and Senior Physio. This service will provide MDT advanced respiratory care at home to those in Morecambe Bay who have high symptom burden, high complexity, and high use of urgent emergency care, to better manage their respiratory disease at home. You will work alongside our part-time specialist OT and cover a Bay-wide caseload of patients in the community setting.
So, if you have a passion for respiratory care and want to help us to improve the lives of people living with respiratory disease across Morecambe Bay, and if you are up for a challenge and want to help us make these new services a success – then this role could be for you!
Main duties of the job
Duties outlined in the Job description, but specifically the role will primarily support the delivery of the new Advanced Respiratory Care at Home service. This will include holistic patient assessments, MDT case planning, and provision of OT interventions for symptom management for those with complex Respiratory conditions (e.g. Breathlessness, fatigue, and physical function/activity).
The Service covers a large geographical area and as such successful candidates will be required to travel independently between bases and patients' own homes.
The role(s) will be ideally suited to Occupational therapists who have a passion for person-centred rehabilitation, a working knowledge and experience of working in the community and/or Respiratory setting who are willing to work in a new and quickly evolving service.
Working for our organisation
Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals, and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health, and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice, and support.
UHMBT Hospital services operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units, and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case, and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
