Are you passionate about revolutionizing chemical analysis by developing advanced robotics and automation? Do you want to contribute to sustainable product innovation in the consumer goods industry?
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our interdisciplinary project aimed at digitally transforming chemical analysis using advanced robotics & automation.
This project, supported by Unilever, will focus on developing a modular robotic platform capable of integrating robotics, chemical processing equipment, and analytical instruments for enhanced efficiency, accuracy, and reproducibility in chemical analysis.
The successful candidate will work across the research groups of Dr John Ward (www.ward-lab.co.uk) and Dr Gabriella Pizzuto (https://gabriellapizzuto.github.io/).
* Work on an industry-supported project to transform sustainable product development.
* Receive multidisciplinary training spanning chemistry, robotics, and data science.
* Be part of a dynamic and diverse research environment within the Materials Innovation Factory (https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/materials-innovation-factory/) — the UK's largest industry-academia co-location for physical sciences research.
* Gain skills in emerging fields, including AI-driven chemistry, digital automation, and robotics.
We welcome applications from candidates with:
* A Master’s Degree or equivalent in Physical Sciences, Engineering, or Computational Science (exceptional candidates with a First-Class Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field may also be considered).
* A keen interest in interdisciplinary research, laboratory automation, robotics, and materials chemistry.
We are particularly enthusiastic about attracting applicants from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, ensuring a collaborative and inclusive environment for innovation.
* Fully funded 4-year studentship
* Annual stipend of £20,780 (2025-26) minimum
* Full tuition fees (£4,800/year)
* Research Training Support Grant for consumables, conference travel, etc.
EPSRC Studentships are available to any prospective student wishing to apply including both home and international students. While EPSRC funding will not cover international fees, a limited number of scholarships to meet the fee difference will be available to support outstanding international students.
