Background
Byres Community Hub (Byres Hub) in the School of Health and Wellbeing (SHW) is a unique space for research and community collaboration in the heart of Glasgow’s West End. Byres Hub hosts exhibitions, connects School researchers with community members, and offers a busy programme of knowledge exchange, community and public engagement activities. The Hub aims to engage people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds in SHW’s teaching, research and civic engagement.
Job Purpose
To be responsible for the curation of Byres Hub in the Clarice Pears building, working alongside the Community Engagement Lead for SHW and other team members to help with the organisation of an inclusive and engaging programme at Byres Hub. To lead bespoke initiatives and manage events in line with the Hub’s vision which will involve coordinating with both a diverse range of external organisations and also internal teams. To look for opportunities for collaboration between Hub groups and research groups and broker these connections for meaningful two-way engagement. To capture impacts and work with Byres Hub Advisory group, made up of external and internal members, to steer the evaluation of Byres Hub.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Community Engagement Strategy: In collaboration with colleagues, support the implementation of Byres Community Hub’s strategy that drives SHW’s vision of conducting high-impact research and contributing to improved population health and be a critical part of the business case to show growth.
2. Event Management: Co-design, develop, organise, and support the delivery of inclusive and engaging community activities in the Clarice Pears building, such as pop-up exhibitions, talks, tours, networking and skill-sharing events, training workshops, and festivals. Provide support for hybrid events and outreach activities in community settings. This involves coordinating with a diverse range of external organisations and collaborating with internal teams, including reception, catering, central timetabling, AV, facilities, and communications.
3. Exhibitions: Lead the curation of temporary exhibitions in Byres Hub with internal and external partners and liaise with creative partners such as the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS) Design and UofG Printing Services.
4. Internal Engagement: Contribute to events and provide engagement expertise with staff and students in the SHW and play an active role in School working groups on operations and culture change. Build relationships with SHW research groups to identify opportunities to engage community groups with their research.
5. External Relationships: Help identify opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships and foster relationships with third sector, voluntary and not-for-profit organisations, providing them with routes to contribute to the design and delivery of activities and programmes in SHW, and to attract and reach diverse audiences, particularly those who do not currently access the University.
6. Cross-University Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues across the Western Campus and College of MVLS and play an active role in University-wide working groups for public, community, and civic engagement activities to build networks, share best practices, and develop web-based resources.
7. Byres Hub Volunteers: Deliver training, allocate and supervise Hub community and student volunteers, and support towards recognition such as Graduate Skills awards.
8. Communications: Ensure clear project management communications with the Administration Assistant and the wider operations team in the SHW to facilitate the smooth running of the Byres Hub public events calendar. Work with the Community Engagement Lead and Engagement and Communications Coordinator on the Hub Communications plan, including writing and editing content for event marketing materials, booking pages, the Hub newsletter, monthly blog, social media posts, news stories, Teams channels, website, electronic screens in Clarice Pears building and presentations for a range of audiences.
9. Evaluation and Reporting: Work with the Community Engagement Lead and the Hub Advisory Group to support the further development of the Hub’s evaluation strategy to capture impacts. Analyse data including numbers of public, partners, staff and students involved in Byres Hub, evaluation, web, and social media analytics, and generate reports to inform both day to day decision-making and future community engagement and involvement activity in Byres Hub to ensure it meets the needs of its users.
10. Budget Management: Work within the Byres Hub budget and support funding applications and research grant applications citing Byres Hub.
11. Additional Duties: Undertake other reasonable duties as assigned by Line Manager or Head of Professional Services.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
1. A1. Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles. Or Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 7 (Advanced Higher / Scottish Vocational Qualification level 3, Higher National Certificate) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
2. A2. Understanding of barriers to access for under-represented communities and appreciation of health inequalities.
3. A3. Understanding of project management methodologies.
4. A4. Detailed and demonstrable knowledge of events management and administrative delivery processes and procedures.
5. A5. Familiarity with event policies and best practices, along with a working knowledge of GDPR, health and safety regulations, and broader safeguarding policies.

Experience
Essential:
1. E1. Experience in community development or community engagement, preferably within the sectors of community outreach, community health, public health, the voluntary sector, or heritage and cultural environments.
2. E2. Administrative experience, including organising schedules and maintaining records.
3. E3. Some experience in delivering training.
4. E4. Experience of events management and associated administrative delivery processes and procedures, including experience in collaborating with partners, suppliers, and managing specialised equipment (such as audio visual and online platforms).
5. E5. Some experience of exercising initiative and working independently with researchers and community groups.
6. E6. Worked as part of a team to deliver programme or projects successfully.
Desirable:
1. F1. Experience in utilising exhibitions to engage the public with research and successfully developing and delivering projects with community groups and exhibitions with research and/or art exhibitions.
2. F2. Experience in budget monitoring and procurement processes including ordering goods and ensuring cost-effectiveness.
3. F3. Experience in web content management systems.
Additional Information
The role is primarily campus-based - working in Byres Hub and the public exhibition area on Level 1 of the Clarice Pears building, with desk space on an upper floor. It will also involve time spent in community settings which will require occasional evening and weekend working to work directly with community groups.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £33,232 - £36,924 per annum pro rata.
This post is part time (24.5 hours per week) and Open Ended with funding for up to 36 months from the start date.
