The Scottish Ambulance Service is at the frontline of the NHS in Scotland, responding to over 600,000 emergency calls a year, we provide an emergency Ambulance Service to a population of over 5 million people, across the mainland and island communities.
The Integrated Clinical Hub (ICH) was established within the Scottish Ambulance Service in 2023 and is a multi-disciplinary team of clinicians including Clinical Advisors, Senior Clinical Support Managers, Advanced Practitioners and GP’s. Within both the ICH and across SAS, we are committed to developing a workforce capable of delivering the highest levels of quality service and clinical, person-centred care, in line with Scottish Ambulance Service and NHS Quality Strategy.
We are currently accepting applications within the Integrated Clinical Hub to undertake the role of Remote Consultation - Advanced Practitioner (Urgent & Primary Care), from qualified applicants who meet the SAS criteria for the Urgent and Primary Care role.
This is a fantastic opportunity to support our growing teams within the Hub and continue to build upon the success of the Advanced Practice programme across SAS.
Since its development at the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Remote Consultation by Advanced Practitioners within SAS has proven crucial to ensure patients receive the right care at the right time, in the right place. This may be signposting to partner organisations better suited to their needs, referral to established community pathways, a face-to-face assessment by an ambulance colleague or self-care advice given by phone or video link. It has been effective in reducing the number of hospital admissions from 999 calls, as well as providing an extra layer of patient safety for those patients identified as deteriorating and who require an immediate ambulance attendance. This post offers an exciting opportunity to be embedded fully within the Integrated Clinical Hub and support the Remote Consultation for Advanced Practitioners within SAS.
Advanced Practitioners (AP) in Urgent & Primary Care undertake a dynamic role providing high-level, independent decision-making, including assessment, diagnosis, management, and treatment including prescribing for patients with complex multidimensional needs. The role of the Remote Consultation Advanced Practitioner will be to provide virtual patient consultation and professional support for other clinicians from within the ICH.
Operating at this level, the AP will possess a wide-ranging breadth of knowledge and understanding in addition to evidence of critical thinking, patient assessment and clinical care. Delivery of this advanced level of care will be supported by a scope of practice beyond what is currently required for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Paramedic or registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a Nurse.
Applicants will be an HCPC registered Paramedic or NMC registered Nurse, have a minimum of SCQF level 11 Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Practice (including V300 prescribing) and have evidence of completion of an appropriate Advanced Practice Competency Framework. In addition, you will have a significant and demonstrable level of clinical practice and recent employment within primary/urgent/emergency care at Advanced Practice level.
Applicants are advised to read all the supporting documentation prior to applying. The reflective learning statement should be completed by all applicants.
Please note, you will be required to undertake an assessment day. Full details of assessment will be provided prior to the day.
For successful qualified candidates, base location throughout Scotland can be negotiated. Please indicate the preferred area (North, East or West) you are applying for within the subject line of your email.
