Engineering Manager
Function
Management of the multi-discipline Engineering functions with COS, including the drafting team. Resource planning, work assignments, performance management, coaching and training needs analysis for the technical team.
Be a point of contact for technical queries from the field and clients. Represent the company as a senior technical person in front of clients, regulatory bodies and certifying authorities. Develop the engineering team into a disciplined, competent and capable body that can support sales, projects, workshop and clients to the highest standards.
Engineering Change Management. Work planning & progress monitoring. Checking and approval of critical engineering documents
Implement and maintain required engineering processes to ensure design integrity at all stages of the design process
Ensure Sales proposals undertake adequate and robust Concept Design Reviews and that intended offerings are within the competence of the organization and sufficiently defined for tender and handover phases
Establish resource planning that maps demand vs capacity and highlights any resource issue in time to enable the business to react to same
Act as coach and mentor to the engineering team
Act as role model for the high standards required for performance as an engineer within the company
Undertake regular competency assessments of the team and determine Training Needs arising from this
Manage and control project engineering hours in line with budget and timeline
Represent the company as the senior engineering person towards clients, industry bodies, certifying authorities and any others as may be directed
Participate in project lessons learnt reviews and ensure the applicable lessons are taken back into the team and implemented
Checking and approval of drawings and calculations as required
Recruit and select direct reports in line with Company Policy - shortlist applicants, interview and appoint candidates and subsequently ensure a thorough induction process is completed (with support from the HR Department).
Manage the performance of staff - set and agree individual objectives, review achievement of targets, deal with talent management and assess and address skills gaps.
Handle grievance and disciplinary matters concerning direct reports, as well as participation in such procedures arising in other areas of the business, when required.
Coach and motivate direct reports to develop an effective team that adds value to the business through increased performance.
Comply with financial controls and ensure appropriate value-for-money principles are adhered to as well as identify opportunities for improved business performance.
Plan, direct, supervise and co-ordinate work activities of subordinates.
Set an example of professional conduct for others to aspire to - you will carry out your duties professionally and resolve any incidents of below-standard conduct immediately.
Be a leader, take charge and direct when required, as well as offer opinions and comment to colleagues to achieve business goals.
Qualifications
A formal engineering degree and ideally chartered
