Job Description:
Permanent
NHS Lothian is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best.
To this end, NHS Lothian welcomes applications from all sections of society.
Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Portfolio Pathway (formerly known as CESR - Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once it has been awarded. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
Applications are welcome for the above Permanent, full-time (40 hours per week) post based in Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
This substantive permanent post will help meet nationally-set waiting time targets for scheduled and unscheduled care. It will be based in the Luminal Gastroenterology Unit of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and involve both out-patient and in-patient activities. The weekly timetable separates in-patient and out-patient duties. The standard week will include 1-2 outpatient clinics and up to 3-4 endoscopy/procedure lists. Endoscopic sessions will include both upper and lower procedures and the applicant should be fully trained in both. Every 8-week cycle will comprise: one week of in-patient duties including responsibility for acute gastroenterology patients in Ward 205 and elsewhere in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and urgent endoscopies; and one week of referrals triage, during which elective activities will be reduced. The post-holder will contribute to the out-of-hours acute bleeding service. The post will not include liver disease (which is looked after on site by the separate but linked Hepatology team) and there is no General Internal Medicine commitment. There may be sessional commitments working at other sites in Lothian e.g. East Lothian Community Hospital (ELCH); or the Regional Endoscopy Unit at QMH, Dunfermline. The post will favour an interest in endoscopic resection (EMR/ESD) and third-space endoscopy e.g. POEM, therefore experience in this area is required.
