Urban features including façade features, window size, building age, land use, tree coverage, and density are important parameters to determine urban sustainability, energy, and climate performance for cities and buildings. However, it is difficult to extract such information in real cities due to the complexity of the urban texture.
Harnessing the wealth of urban big data, from street views to satellite and infrared imagery, this project aims to pioneer the use of computer vision techniques in extracting critical urban features.
The objective is to provide ground-breaking analyses for urban-level sustainability and climate impact assessments.
You will join a dynamic research team in the Welsh School of Architecture, collaborating closely with researchers from the School of Computer Science and Informatics at Cardiff University. There will also be opportunities to interact with colleagues in Atmospheric Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), USA.
Person Specification
* Working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in urban science, engineering, computer science, data science, or a related subject.
* Previous experience with big data and machine learning in computer vision is especially welcome.
