We are seeking an experienced and proactive Workshop Manager to lead the maintenance and repair operations for our Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) and Manual Handling Equipment (MHE) fleet. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all vehicles are maintained in line with legal and safety standards, optimising workshop productivity, and managing a team of technicians to deliver exceptional service. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, being able to diagnose and repair faults whilst developing the team around them.
Key Responsibilities:
Fleet Maintenance & Repairs:
* Oversee the maintenance and repair of the HGV fleet, ensuring compliance with all legal, safety, and industry standards.
* Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for the fleet to minimise downtime.
* Ensure the timely completion of all routine inspections, servicing, and MOTs.
* Identify and resolve any mechanical, electrical, or technical issues in a timely manner.
* Manage and supervise a team of skilled HGV technicians and support staff, ensuring high levels of performance, quality, and adherence to health and safety regulations.
* Provide training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for the workshop team.
* Allocate tasks efficiently to optimise workshop productivity while ensuring high standards of work.
Health & Safety:
* Ensure a safe working environment by enforcing compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, company policies, and industry best practices.
* Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
Budgeting & Cost Control:
* Manage the workshop budget, monitor expenditure, and identify cost-saving opportunities.
* Control and manage the procurement of parts and materials, negotiating with suppliers to obtain the best value for money.
* Keep accurate records of work completed and costs incurred, producing regular reports on workshop performance.
Inventory Management:
* Oversee the management of parts and equipment inventory, ensuring adequate stock levels and efficient stock rotation.
* Implement processes to minimise wastage and ensure availability of critical spare parts.
Customer Service:
* Liaise with internal stakeholders and departments to ensure vehicle downtime is minimised and fleet availability is maximised.
* Ensure effective communication with fleet managers and drivers regarding vehicle status, repairs, and servicing schedules.
* Identify areas for improvement within the workshop and implement process enhancements to improve efficiency and reduce downtime.
* Stay up to date with industry developments, new technologies, and best practices to ensure the fleet and workshop remain at the forefront of the sector.
Key Requirements:
* Proven experience as a Workshop Manager, Senior Technician, or in a similar leadership role within an HGV or commercial vehicle workshop.
* In-depth knowledge of HGV maintenance and repair procedures, as well as relevant legislation (e.g., MOT regulations, EU tachograph rules).
* Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience managing a diverse team of technicians and support staff.
* Excellent organisational and problem-solving skills.
* Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities effectively.
* Strong understanding of health and safety regulations and best practices in a workshop environment.
* Computer literate, with experience using fleet management and workshop software.
* A valid HGV licence or relevant technical qualification (such as City & Guilds Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance) is desirable.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively liaise with both internal teams and external suppliers.
Key Performance Indicators:
* H&S – number of accidents, days without LTI, accident frequency rate.
* Vehicle Availability – VOR %, vehicle turnaround time, breakdown attendance time.
