University Hospitals Sussex are delighted to offer the position of a full (or part) time Consultant Haematologist to work alongside our team of six Haematologists in the western half of the Trust. Our Haematology service is entering an exciting phase of growth and development, supported by investment in staffing and this is an excellent opportunity to become involved in developing a clinically led, integrated Haematology Service within the wider trust along the South Coast. This role would suit a recently qualified candidate seeking their first consultant appointment or an established consultant seeking a professional opportunity in a new region. The position is based primarily in Worthing Hospital but will involve some travel to other sites including St Richards Hospital in Chichester. Our team is committed to providing excellent, patient focused care while driving innovation in treatment and research.
The Haematology department provides an extensive haemato-oncology practice to level 2b care, as well as general haematology including obstetrics and paediatrics, transfusion medicine and is a UKHCDO accredited Haemophilia Centre.
Main duties of the job
The post involves leading three general Haematology clinics a week for both new and follow up appointments, reviewing Haematology inpatient admissions, lab work and participation in our weekly sector multi-disciplinary team meetings and other departmental meetings as well as involvement in audit and guideline production.
The post holder will also be required to support colleagues with specialist advice on all aspects of Haematology both within the trust and in primary care. To provide clinical support to the Haematology Laboratory. To actively engage in departmental meetings, clinical governance and teaching to our Spr's and clinical fellow and to become actively involved in our Haematology trials portfolio.

Job responsibilities
The appointee will be expected to fulfil all job roles of a Consultant Haematologist. They will provide inpatient care for haematology patients up to and including BCSH level 2B. They will be expected to attend clinics for both new and follow up patients, participate in MDT and departmental meetings and participate regularly in audit and guideline production. In addition we would expect the appointee to complete all patient-related administrative duties in a timely manner as well as bone marrow and blood film reporting, participate in safe intrathecal chemotherapy administration and support our Sprs in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. They would also be expected to provide consultative advice to other healthcare professionals within the hospital and primary care settings.
We have a very active trials department covering both malignant and non malignant disciplines and are regularly within the top ten recruiters to national trials. We currently have the following open to recruitment or in follow up within the trust: AML18, REMoDL-A, Flair, RADAR, Fitness, Mithridate and Victor.
The appointee will be expected to participate in clinical trials and maintain good clinical practice. The Trust has an active Research Support team, and other research and development is encouraged.
The appointee will be expected to maintain their clinical personal development and attend annual appraisal and revalidation.
As a Consultant Haematologist, we would expect the appointee to act as a leader within the department and champion the goals of the department and the organisation as a whole.
The trust runs monthly mandated clinical governance half day with presentations from individual departments or stand-alone afternoons for departmental issues. Both hospitals currently have individual MDTs and regular teaching sessions within department. There is an active audit programme being led by the audit lead Dr Narat and materially assisted by the hospital audit department. Participation in fortnightly journal club and other educational meetings is encouraged.
