Background
To assist in research (by carrying out data collection or analyses) to create knowledge through providing research support for projects and research groups.
A position of Research Associate is available in the laboratory of Andrew Lovering, for a period of 36 months. This involves a structural biology project working on lipid transfer proteins of bacteria, particularly from the predator Bdellovibrio.
The applicant must have experience in bacterial cell culture, protein purification, protein stability assays and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry.
You will provide technical expertise, support and guidance in a team working on lipid transfer proteins. You will need an in-depth understanding of the research questions, techniques and experimental protocols. You will be able to use your knowledge to advise on procedures, diagnose and resolve problems and suggest solutions to issues which arise.

Main Duties
* Cultivation of bacteria
* Purification of recombinant proteins, including membrane proteins
* Setting up protein crystallization experiments
* Setting up and analysing Isothermal Titration Calorimetry experiments
* Assisting in managing the laboratory
* Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews
* Analyse research data as directed
* Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
* Develop or adapt techniques, models and methods
* Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research
* Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
* Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research
* Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture
Person Specification
* Degree or equivalent in relevant subject area
* Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques
* Experience in Isothermal Titration Calorimetry of both protein:protein and protein:ligand complexes
* Experience in thermal shift assays to determine protein stability
* Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
* Ability to access and organise resources successfully
* Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
