Overview
Position Summary:
The Health and Safety Engineer is responsible for supporting the development, improvement, administration, and facilitation of the Health and Safety programs. This role is pivotal to the continuous improvement of safety risk identification, occupational and process safety programs, and work processes at the site. The engineer will provide expertise in risk assessments, compliance, incident investigations, and employee education to foster a strong safety culture within the organization. This role reports to the Director of Environmental, Health & Safety.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
* Collaborate with and support groups to establish and maintain a safe work environment through effective coaching of personnel in the importance of following safe work practices, ensuring health and safety concerns are addressed, and advocating for appropriate action when deficiencies are identified.
* Develop and/or improve existing safety programs and associated training aimed at reducing exposure to workplace hazards and compliance with applicable standards.
* Support continual improvement of hazard recognition across all levels of the organization and facilitate routine inspections and issue tracking programs.
* Organize, lead, and facilitate safety meetings to discuss safety issues, review data, address concerns, educate employees, and ensure follow-up actions to promote a safe work environment.
* Support the Director of EHS to develop and track data associated with key metrics.
* Support safety committees to utilize established tools and to share best practices across all locations
* Support investigations into incidents, identifying root causes, and developing effective corrective action plans.
* Perform routine site inspections to ensure programs are being fully implemented.
* Provide technical process and occupational safety support for capital projects and other changes utilizing an effective Management of Change system.
* Maintain accurate records and prepare reports related to safety incidents, inspections, and regulatory compliance.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
* Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, engineering, biology, chemistry, or a related field, or an associate’s degree and 5+ years of related work experience.
* Detailed knowledge of federal health and safety laws and regulations (OSHA, NRC, etc.) and their applicability to manufacturing and laboratory operations.
* Experience with creating occupational and process safety programs and procedures.
* Familiarity with the implementation and auditing of environmental, health and safety management systems.
* Experience in Risk Assessments, Hazard Analysis, Incident Investigations using Root Cause Analysis methods, writing investigation reports, and presenting investigation results at safety meetings.
* Familiarity with hazardous materials management and environmental safety standards.
* Ability to collect and organize technical facts and data and present them clearly and concisely, both orally and in written reports.
* Excellent collaboration and facilitation skills with the ability to lead discussion topics with cross-functional departments and manufacturing sites.
* Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to deliver training, lead safety meetings, and prepare detailed reports.
* Proficient computer literacy skills (Microsoft Office Suite).
* Strong PowerPoint skills.
* Strong attention to detail.
Preferred Requirements:
* Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
* Experience with electrical safety (NFPA 70e and 70b).
* Work experience in a radiological environment and/or production facility.
Physical Requirements:
* Work to be conducted in an office environment, laboratories, engineering R&D, and/or production environment.
* Must be comfortable working within radiation environments.
* Participate in activities that require following extensive safety precautions and use of protective equipment, e.g., respirators and multiple layers.Frequent use of a computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse, and manual dexterity.
* Must be able to lift, push, and/or pull a maximum of 50 pounds.
* Ability to work sitting and standing for extended periods.
* Ability to stoop/bend, squat/crouch, kneel, climb, work at/above shoulder height with both hands, use both hands/arms for strong grasp and either hand to turn or twist.
* Ability to ascend or descend ladders, scaffolding, ropes, poles and the like.
* Ability to travel across Nusano sites.
