We have a new vision to modernise our Building Control Service and create the best team we have ever had…
Colchester is Britain’s First City, and Britain’s Newest City. A wealth of heritage buildings, coastline and Constable countryside surrounds a modern City that is rapidly changing to match our thriving population growth. Our Building Control team will be at the heart of regulating development so that it remains high quality as we remain passionate about our people, customers, and communities. Good quality services will create a better tomorrow for future generations, a challenge that will need forward-thinking and innovation in continuing the delivery of our aspirations.
If you are an existing Building Control professional there is an opportunity to develop your career in a rewarding environment and enjoy a role that would enable you to gain diverse and interesting experiences. You would join a friendly-but-hardworking team who strive for continual improvement emphasising the quality of outcomes. Our team are empowered; dedicated, constructive, open and honest, actively listen, learn from one another, and act as individual leaders. This positive team culture embraces proactive, collaborative, and solution-focused approaches that are fundamental to the successful future of everything we do… If you value these behaviours too, we would love to hear from you.
From the start you will be ready to operate with reasonable autonomy, responsibility and accountability to make an effective and efficient contribution. You will assess plans, inspect sites, offer constructive guidance, ensure building regulations are correctly interpreted and followed, make decisions, and provide assurance. When demonstrating your calibre, you should exhibit good construction industry knowledge, specifically Building Control duties, methods, and techniques. Understanding of legislation, regulations and professional codes of practice for the sector are expected.
You must be registered (or working towards registration) with the Building Safety Regulator at Level 2 or higher. We can also offer help to willing candidates who need further time, training and development; but show the ability to attain Registration with our support.
In return, we are happy to talk about flexible working arrangements. You could blend home, remote, office and site working. Full time hours are 37 a week, but we are open to discussing “any hours” flexibility, allowing for individual work/life balance, such as part time, school hours only, term-time only or 9-day fortnights. In addition to the basic salary, a Market Forces Supplement can be applied to this role to increase this. You will also have the chance to join the emergency/dangerous structures response rota and earn additional payments. You will also be reimbursed for any work travel expenses, although working locally in Colchester means that you will not need to travel far and spend hours driving.
A full driving licence is required for this post as well as access to an insured vehicle for work purposes.
Other employee benefits for this role include:
Excellent Local Government Pension Scheme choice.
Annual Leave entitlement up to 26 days a year.
Additional leave on the 8 public holidays.
Extra statutory leave for 2 days at Christmas.
The ability to add up to 2 “flex days” off each month.
Options to purchase additional days of holiday.
Our new “Wagestream”, which allows pre-tax saving with attractive interest rates; or can be used to take your salary early if an unexpected personal expense arises.
Contribution towards professional memberships.
Mileage and subsistence allowance payments.
The popular “Vine Extras” discount scheme for retail, goods and services.
Tax-free cycle schemes.
Discounted fitness classes, gym and/or swimming pool memberships.
Reduced cost private health care options.
Staff incentives for events, museums and exhibitions.
Diverse learning opportunities, including transferable skills, “soft skills” and ways to open up career progression routes using apprenticeships, coaching, mentoring, leadership and management qualifications.
Employee Assistance Programmes providing confidential support networks.
A variety of in-house health and wellbeing activities, groups and programmes.
