There are development opportunities that support career progression within health visiting. We have a number of Band 7 posts that can be considered alongside either clinical or management development.
BCHC also supports practitioners who have been out of practice for a while and offers a Return to Practice framework; all of the above can be discussed at interview.
The post holder is responsible for:
Assessing need and providing health promotion and illness prevention services to the local population. The post holder will work within a corporate caseload as well as with the local population on children and family centred public health related issues.
The post holder will be a first level registered nurse with a Health Visiting Degree/Diploma/Certificate. The post holder will work within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
You will be responsible for:
1. Day-to-day management and delegation of work to nursery nurses, link workers, and any other support staff within the team (including supervision and monitoring the work of these staff).
2. Overseeing and planning in-service development for these staff.
3. Developing a workload profile identifying those groups within the population with specific health needs.
4. Working closely with the primary health care team, participating in activities that address the health needs of the general practice, case load, families using local children’s centres, early education clusters, and other health partners.
5. Delivering the Health Child Programme through compassionate caring assessment, analysis of need, developing, implementing, and evaluating programmes of care using assessment tools in line with commissioner service specification for the health visiting service to address identified health needs.
6. Formulating and agreeing with families packages of care appropriate to their need where necessary, opening active health and wellbeing files, and monitoring all open files in accordance with the records keeping policy.
7. Carrying out health promotion and disease prevention activities, meeting and reporting on agreed key performance indicators where appropriate.
8. Providing evidence-based advice on health issues to members of the local population in a way that promotes behavioural change and builds on strengths.
9. Working to current NICE guidelines on antenatal and postnatal mental health to identify, support, and refer women at risk of developing postnatal depression, and those who are mild to moderately depressed.
10. Maintaining quality standards of care using audit and other monitoring systems to evaluate the service.
11. Identifying vulnerable children in need of protection and referring to Social Care and Health following the Birmingham Safeguarding Children Board policies in all cases of suspected or actual emotional, physical, sexual abuse and neglect.
12. Attending team around the family meetings, case conferences, and undertaking responsibilities that are appropriate to the role of the Health Visitor as agreed in the multi-agency child protection plan.
13. Working in partnership with families to plan and arrange appointments for clinics and home visits.
14. Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with families, primary healthcare team, and other professionals working in both the statutory and voluntary organisations.
15. Ensuring all equipment used by professionals in clinic settings are maintained and fit for purpose.
16. Ordering equipment for client use as identified following a healthcare assessment and advising on safe fitting and appropriate use.
17. Promoting and supporting immunisation programmes offered nationally to service users.
18. Entering all data required on the data collection system accurately and on time according to Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust policy.
19. Attending and actively participating in staff meetings including multi-agency steering groups and taking responsibility for completion of appropriate tasks arising from any such meeting.
20. Ensuring all written records are kept to the required NMC standard, being able to write letters of referral to other services and to produce complex reports for court hearings relating to child protection.
21. Dealing with and supporting families through difficult family situations such as illness, domestic violence, bereavement, and child protection.
22. Having ongoing responsibility for the management of a caseload, including electronic recording, data inputting, and reports.
23. Providing professional advice on issues relating to Health Visiting and promoting an understanding of health needs among other agencies.
24. Supervising, mentoring, and assessing pre-registration student nurses on placement with Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust where appropriate as part of their education programme.
25. Accessing safeguarding, caseload, and clinical supervision in order to ensure a resilient workforce which prioritises excellent safe, compassionate care.
26. Participating in Nurse prescribing – undertaking a full assessment of minor conditions appropriate to the role of the Health Visitor, and where indicated prescribing from the formulary appropriate to level of training, and accessing continuing professional development in prescribing.
27. Conveying complex information to other professionals and to clients and working with other professionals and clients in difficult circumstances such as child protection, terminal illness, or bereavement.
28. Planning, organising, and running clinics/groups.
