Job Summary
The Department of Infectious is seeking to appoint an Infectious Diseases Specialist Nurse to join the Complex Outpatient Antimicrobial Therapy (COpAT) team. You would be joining a thriving team of Medics, Community Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Nurses.
The successful candidate will be expected to work as part of the UHB COpAT team to coordinate and seek referrals to the service within University Hospitals Birmingham and ensure robust clinical management of these patients throughout their treatment in conjunction with the relevant community team.
The ideal candidate must be highly motivated, have the ability to work with all disciplines within secondary and primary care, be confident and willing to undertake self-directed and supervised learning, and be able to transfer existing skills into the team.
You will be expected to work across all Trust hospital sites and undertake some community visits as necessary.
This post is advertised as Band 6/7 depending on experience. If appointed at Band 6, you will undertake a period of 6-12 months training and successfully complete a competency programme to ensure autonomous practice is achieved.
Main Duties of the Job
1. Provide treatment and advice within your scope of practice, working autonomously when safe to do so.
2. Follow policies and guidelines in various settings (acute, primary, community).
3. Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, ensuring evidence-based, compassionate care.
4. Safely administer medicines, including intravenous medications, and ensure proper documentation.
5. Be willing to successfully complete the non-medical prescribing course (if not already done so).
6. Offer safe seamless care, from referral to discharge, making informed, patient-centred decisions.
7. Troubleshoot concerns raised by ward/community teams ensuring patient safety.
8. Advocate for patients, address their educational and communication needs, and ensure a safe discharge process.
9. Report safeguarding concerns as per trust policy.
10. Participate in audits and deliver teaching sessions to improve care quality.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
* Registered Adult / Child Nurse on the NMC Register (Field dependent upon role).
* Evidence of post registration CPD / Post registration qualification in the appropriate area of specialty or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience and short courses to degree / masters level equivalent FHEQ Level 6 / 7.
* Recognised mentorship course.
Desirable
* To have or working towards a MSc/ Masters qualification.
* To have or working towards advanced health assessment module -- where applicable to the role.
* Non-Medical Prescriber/ willingness to undertake - where applicable to the role.
Experience Essential
* Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC.
* Significant years post registration experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at B6 or above in defined or associated specialty.
* Extensive experience of working autonomously at a specialist level.
* Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of ongoing professional development/ competence.
* Demonstrate expert knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to specialty.
* Experience and enthusiasm for developing educational programmes and teaching / assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting.
* Working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment.
* Experience of patient service user advocacy role.
* Can demonstrate expert nursing knowledge with an ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients and give advice and information to patients / relatives/ care staff.
* Awareness of current relevant NHS policy context relating to the specialty.
* Has understanding / experience of the principles of Safeguarding.
* Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance.
Desirable
* Experience of delivering change management both personally and as a facilitator.
* Experience in service development.
* Awareness of current research related to the specialty.
