The Staff Nurse reports into the Inpatient Unit Sister/Charge Nurse and is responsible for providing care to patients within our Inpatient Unit (IPU).
Main duties of the job
The Staff Nurse will deliver expert, compassionate, and individualised nursing care to patients with life-limiting illnesses. The role involves managing and coordinating the clinical care of patients, ensuring their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs are met with dignity and respect. The Staff Nurse is responsible for assessing patient conditions, developing and implementing care plans, administering medications, and providing symptom management. Additionally, the Staff Nurse offers support and guidance to patients' families, helping them navigate the complexities of end-of-life care. By working collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team, the Staff Nurse ensures the highest standard of care, enhancing the quality of life for patients and those important to them.
About us
St Giles Hospice is a registered charity founded in 1983 by the Reverend Paul Brothwell, originally to improve the care of local people dying with cancer.
We now support patients and their loved ones living with a terminal illness. Our dedicated team provides individually-tailored care, free of charge, either at the hospice or in patients' own homes across our communities.
We spend close to £10 million a year providing our specialist services. With just 18% of this funded by the Government, we rely heavily on donations and income generation from the local community.
Job responsibilities
The role entails but is not limited to:
1. Clinical Practice
o Demonstrate the necessary skills to establish and maintain effective communication for patients, relatives, and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
o Communicate with patients and relatives, providing active listening, counsel, providing information, and teaching about the dying process.
o Communicate with other healthcare/allied healthcare professionals to enhance the flow of communication and facilitate admission and discharge.
o Ensure that patients are referred to other members of the team such as dietician, occupational therapist, family support, and physiotherapist as required.
o Provide emotional/spiritual support to patients and families throughout the disease and dying trajectory.
o Provide out-of-hours telephone support and advice for patients, relatives, and external healthcare professionals regarding symptom control and psychological care.
2. Clinical and Professional Responsibilities
o To provide total physical, emotional, and spiritual care and support to patients, relatives, and carers throughout their admission.
o To be competent in the use of syringe pumps and infusions.
o To assess needs and develop, implement, and evaluate special palliative nursing care.
o To ensure that supportive nursing care and therapies are given safely.
o Verify death of patients, perform care after death, and provide bereavement support for families.
3. Managerial Responsibilities
o Coordinate, supervise, and motivate a team of nurses as shift team leader.
o Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individual specialist palliative patient care.
o Deal with accidents and incidents and complaints involving patients, relatives, visitors, and staff.
4. Education and Development Responsibilities
o Attend mandatory training and relevant courses/study days.
o Participate in the orientation/education programmes of all new staff.
5. Research and Quality Responsibilities
o Participate in any nursing research initiatives within the unit.
o Ensure compliance with the policies and procedures of St Giles Hospice.

* Eligibility to work in the UK
* Valid driving licence
Experience
* Experience of working in a healthcare environment with palliative care.
* Demonstrated experience in delivering palliative care, including symptom management and pain relief.
Qualifications
* Current NMC Registration
* Willingness to undertake required study.
Skills
* Ability to practice as a safe competent practitioner.
* Ability to work alone or as part of a team.
