An excellent opportunity has arisen to advertise for an early career clinical post at the South West Cleft Service. This job is part of the surgical team but would suit individuals aspiring to pursue paediatric medicine, surgery (ENT, Plastic, Oral & Maxillofacial, or Paediatric general surgery), or dental careers. The successful applicant will be exposed to all aspects of cleft care and would be involved in assisting/operating in theatre (children and adults), ward reviews of inpatients, outpatient clinics, and assisting the other specialties within the clinical and administrative members of the cleft service. The successful candidate would also be encouraged to undertake research with the Cleft Collective at the University of Bristol if they wished.
This is a 6 to 12 month post designed for junior doctors or dentists, who have completed their medical foundation or dental core training and can demonstrate an interest broadly applicable to the post. As such this is very much seen as an early career post, and does not involve the higher surgical training to be a consultant cleft surgeon, that we provide in our Cleft Surgeon Fellowship.
Main duties of the job
Outpatient cleft-related clinics
The Fellow will attend all the multidisciplinary clinics based at the hub unit based in Bristol. There will also be opportunities to attend paediatric medicine clinics, peripheral clinics, speech investigation clinics, cleft audit clinics, paediatric dentistry clinics, adult restorative dentistry, and orthodontic clinics. All aspects of the management of the patient with cleft lip and palate will be covered, including antenatal counselling, new baby assessment, assessment for speech surgery, structured audit and follow up, combined orthodontic and maxillofacial clinics, and adult clinics.
Operative Surgery
The Fellow will assist operating lists at The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and at The Bristol Royal Infirmary. The Fellow will fully participate in pre- and post-operative care of patients on the operating lists that they attend.
There is scope to explore research opportunities and the South West Cleft Service has strong links with the Cleft Collective, also based in Bristol.
Candidates must be fully registered with the GMC / GDC and hold a license to practice at the time of the intended start date.
