Vacancies Band 7 Specialist Occupational Therapist - Stroke
Job Introduction
We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Occupational Therapist to join the Stroke Therapy Team in Swindon Intermediate Care Centre (SWICC). This is a 12 month contract to cover Maternity leave.
This post is based at SWICC, which is a purpose-built 60-bedded inpatient rehabilitation unit on the Great Western Hospital site with access to excellent facilities, including a therapy gym and therapy rehab kitchen.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in the stroke team on Forest ward to strengthen your clinical and leadership skills. You will be using your stroke rehabilitation skills, including cognitive rehab, upper limb and functional rehabilitation. You will be working within the stroke and fractured NOF pathway patients but also work with other general rehab patients.
The team works across the stroke pathway and is led by a band 8a Physiotherapist. You will be supported by Band 7 clinical specialists in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, and Speech and Language Therapy.
Feedback from staff indicates that the whole SWICC therapy team is very supportive and always willing to help each other, which sometimes requires covering across services when needed. We are keen to ensure the continued development of our staff, and as such, there are both internal and external opportunities for training and development.
Key Responsibilities
1. To be responsible for the day-to-day organization of the Occupational Therapy services across the stroke pathway in cooperation with the other band 7’s.
2. To provide Occupational Therapy support and advice for Stroke and neurological cases across the Great Western NHS Foundation Trust, including providing expert opinions to consultants on rehabilitation potential.
3. To manage your own specialist caseload and that of the team under your direct supervision, including Band 2 – 6 Occupational Therapists and Assistants.
4. To lead a multidisciplinary approach to individual complex case management, communicating with and referring to an extensive network of health and social services professionals, families, carers, and the voluntary sector.
5. To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of Stroke and neurological patients with complex presentations and to organize this effectively and efficiently.
6. To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable as an autonomous practitioner for all aspects of your own work, ensuring a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management.
7. To undertake comprehensive assessments of patients with complex presentations using highly specialized skills, including manual techniques and advanced clinical reasoning.
8. To formulate and deliver highly specialized and individualized Occupational Therapy management and treatment plans based on theoretical knowledge and relevant practical experience, utilizing a wide range of treatment skills and options.
9. To measure and evaluate treatment outcomes.
10. To work as a lone practitioner in patients’ homes and various community locations, managing clinical risk through assessment within these environments.
11. To assess capacity, gain consent, and work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent or where there are significant barriers to understanding.
12. To communicate effectively with patients, their families, and all those involved in the patients' care using advice and support and through the provision of information.
13. To use skills including high levels of negotiation, empathy, sensitivity, and alternative communication methods.
