The Financial Counselor advises patients in all matters dealing with payment for hospital services. Serves as a resource for hospital staff and external contacts regarding policies, procedures and forms related to financial requirements for hospital services. Provides assistance with other department activities as needed.
Standards:
1. Courteously meets with patients and families regarding financial obligations
2. Assess patient’s eligibility for CNE Charity Care, payment arrangements, health insurance opportunities, etc.
3. Hold State of RI Navigator License, will train
4. Assist patients in resolving all open accounts
5. Conduct follow up, resolve issues in a timely manner
6. Serve as a resource for hospital staff and external contacts regarding policies, procedures and forms related to financial requirements for hospital services
7. Verifies third party sponsorship eligibility through online resources
8. Documents information accurately in the hospital financial and information systems
9. Obtains billing information and completes necessary work to ensure that information will be delivered to the correct biller
10. Explain financial requirements and insurance/third party payor hospitalization benefits to the patient or responsible party
11. Interpret and provide information regarding patient’s copayment responsibilities and any applicable coinsurance, deductible and lifetime maximums
12. Collection of patient liabilities
13. Apply appropriate Community Benefit and Prompt Pay discounts as applicable
14. Meet with patients who are Medicare exhausted and evaluate for additional payment source
15. Follow up on missing insurance/financial forms
16. Effectively verifies accuracy of prepared material prior to submittal or distribution
17. Completes required request for reports in a timely manner, prioritizing workload
Specifications:
1. High School required; Bachelor's preferred and a minimum of two years of hospital finance experience required.
2. State of RI Navigator Certification preferred. (will train)
3. Must possess excellent human relations and communications skills.
4. Knowledge of personal computers and strong analytical skills required.
5. Position requires scheduling flexibility and the ability to work in a fast paced clinical setting.
6. Proficiency in the English language.
7. Spanish language preferred.
