Research and Development Engineer Location: Newcastle Hays are proud to work with a world-leading provider of counter-mine and combat engineering equipment. Due to notable contract wins there is now an exciting opportunity to join the Research and Development team to ensure products meet and overcome the evolving challenges faced by customers. Role Overview: We are seeking a highly motivated Research and Development Engineer to join a multi-disciplined team. Reporting to the Head of Research and Development, you will leverage your technical expertise to contribute to the development of innovative products and technologies. You will play a key role in concept design, product development, and the delivery of complete manufacturing and technical data packs. Key Responsibilities: Collaborate within a multi-discipline engineering team to meet project requirements. Develop designs from concepts to manufacturing detail, including drawings, specifications, calculations, and reports. Stay updated on current technical trends and innovations to aid in product development. Host and participate in design reviews, providing technical input throughout the development process. Verify designs and develop testing requirements for prototypes and product manufacture. Support the build, commissioning, and trials of new products. Analyze problems and develop innovative solutions. Work within budget constraints to deliver safe, effective products on time and to specification. Provide customer training and support. Work cross-functionally with Commercial, Sales, and Projects teams to improve efficiency and product effectiveness. Coach and mentor team members to enhance their engineering knowledge and capabilities. Communicate professionally with staff, directors, and clients. Skills and Experience: Minimum 2:1 Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent. Chartered Engineer or working towards chartership with the IMechE or another engineering institution. Knowledge of hydraulic and control systems with significant experience in a multi-disciplined engineering team. Experience in new product development is desirable. Proven experience leading a design team is advantageous. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to make sound decisions in high-stress situations. Proficiency in modern engineering design tools (2D 3D CAD, Analysis, etc.). Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Self-motivated, proactive, and results-driven approach. Commitment to staff development and mentoring. Personal Attributes and Requirements: Ability to achieve relevant security clearances as required by defence contractor obligations. Willingness to support in-house training programs. Flexibility to work outside normal business hours and in challenging field conditions when visiting customer sites. Working Conditions: Mainly office-based with occasional visits to external customers in the UK and overseas. Potential for working in inclement or uncomfortable field conditions during customer site visits.
