Teaching Fellow in Critical Care (ST3+ equivalent)

We are delighted to offer the opportunity for dynamic, engaging and committed Teaching Fellows to join our team in Critical Care Medicine. This role will combine clinical duties in critical care with specific roles in medical education within the trust and supporting undergraduate education for Newcastle University Medical School.
This teaching fellow post (ST3+) in Critical Care Medicine will be based in Critical Care across Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post is available from 6 August 2025 for 12 months.
Note this post is critical care only (no anaesthesia placements). The post is suitable for applicants who have completed foundation training (or equivalent) and have two years post-foundation training minimum clinical experience within the NHS from August 2025. The individual will be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to ST3+ level. The duties of the post holder include supporting the delivery of high-quality medical education including the development, delivery and evaluation of courses.
GMC registration with a full license to practice is required at time of application.
Main duties of the job
These posts are at registrar level, and successful candidates will be expected to have completed foundation training, have 2 years post foundation experience in acute specialties in the NHS and to be competent to work with indirect supervision within the intensive care unit. Prior experience in intensive care is required. Evidence of suitable advanced airways skills is also required.
It also includes management of referrals from other departments within the hospital, including the Medical Admissions Units and Emergency Department and providing medical support for the nursing outreach service. Supervision and teaching of more junior Critical Care residents is an important part of this post.
The posts are intended to provide experience in adult critical care medicine including intensive care training equivalent to that recommended by the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.

Job responsibilities
Clinical:
The post holder will take part in a full shift rota, along with other trainees, which provides 24-hour care for patients including weekends and night shifts. This includes:
1. Immediate responsibility for care of critical care patients
2. Responsible for the admission and discharge of patients
3. Liaising with other departments and specialties as appropriate
4. Ordering routine and emergency investigations and receiving and reviewing their results
5. Managing routine and unexpected problems on the critical care unit as they arise
6. Reviewing and admitting new admissions and referrals from both the emergency department and wards.
7. Transfer of patients as appropriate
8. Compliance with trust and departmental protocols and guidelines
As the post holder will be responsible for the assessment and management of critically ill patients with indirect supervision, significant prior experience in intensive care medicine is essential including advanced airway skills and excellent written and spoken English.
Teaching:
The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering clinical teaching sessions to Newcastle University medical students attached to Newcastle Hospitals. The Trust has a role in the delivery of teaching to all 5 years of the undergraduate MBBS programme but most of the teaching will be delivered to students in years 3, 4 and 5. As well as delivering fixed commitments within the programme it is hoped Teaching Fellows will develop their own innovative ideas for clinical teaching during their time with us.
The Trust Undergraduate Team consists of a group of enthusiastic clinicians under the leadership of Assistant Director of Medical Education Dr Ian Baxter, supported by Teaching Fellow Lead Dr Andrew Stanton and an invaluable team of administrative staff. We will offer support and supervision over the year as well as training and mentorship so that you develop your own teaching skills and understanding of wider issues in medical education. As well as being offered in-house induction and training, the post holder will also be supported to undertake a Certificate of Clinical Education as part of this post.
The department has a strong teaching commitment to junior doctors. There is both formal and informal training as well as educational supervision and guidance for the postholders provided in each attachment. The individual critical care units run formal teaching as well as journal clubs, exam practice, self-directed learning and practical procedure teaching. The opportunity exists for the post-holder to attend also educational sessions within other departments of the hospital.
Formal study-leave to attend relevant regional and national courses, (allocation the same as for regional trainees) with reimbursement of expenses (according to the Trust policy and up to the annual limit) is provided. On both hospital sites support will be given in writing clinical guidelines, submitting original clinical articles for publication and for candidates wishing to take on higher qualifications, i.e exams.
Ultrasound (FUSIC mentors): Critical care has a number of FUSIC mentors allowing trainees to undertake formal echo / chest / vascular ultrasound training.
Research:
There are no specific research duties in this post, however there are opportunities to take part in ongoing clinical trials and associate principal investigator roles.

Education and Qualifications
1. Primary Medical Qualification
2. Full GMC registration at time of application with license to practice
3. Postgrad qualification in general medicine/ Anaesthesia / emergency medicine or part
4. Post graduate qualification in anaesthesia or medicine/emergency medicine at a level suitable for ICM ST3 application
Clinical Skills and Knowledge
1. Satisfactory completion of foundation training or equivalent
