Teaching careers in HMC independent schools
We seek to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced person to the new position of Head of Psychology from September 2025.
Role Description

Key Responsibilities
1. Introduce Psychology at A level to our curriculum.
2. Plan any necessary enhancements to deliver the course.
3. Support the development of schemes of work and resources for September 2025.
4. Plan the teaching programme within the department and keep abreast of relevant curricular developments.
5. Write an annual departmental report and improvement plan.
6. Encourage good communication within the department, including sharing good practice.
7. Coordinate the Psychology curriculum.
8. Organise and chair regular departmental meetings.
9. Keep department members informed of INSET, encourage staff development and lead the appraisal of teaching staff.
10. Manage the budget for the department.
11. Take overall responsibility for health & safety in the department.
12. Liaise with the Head of Library and Research.
13. Ensure the development, success and efficiency of the Psychology department and its teaching.
Teaching and Learning
1. Plan and prepare courses, lessons and activities that ensure appropriate challenge and high expectation for all learners.
2. Teach lessons according to the educational needs of the pupils and as required by the school timetable.
3. Set, mark and record work carried out by pupils in accordance with the school marking and presentation policy.
4. Liaise with other teachers to ensure consistency across the curriculum.
5. Periodically review programmes of work and methods of teaching.
6. Maintain good order and discipline among pupils and safeguard their health and safety at all times.
Assessment and Reporting
1. Assess and report upon the progress of pupils in line with school policy, including producing written reports as required.
2. Maintain and update appropriate and accurate records of pupils’ marks and progress.
3. Attend and contribute to parents’ evenings to discuss pupils’ progress with parents.
Co-curricular and Pastoral Duties
The school works a busy six-day week and the person appointed will be expected to play an active part in the school’s tutorial system and in its co-curricular life. The School’s co-curricular programme is broad and is well-supported by the teaching staff. Most teachers at St Peter’s take on pastoral roles as tutors in either a day house or a boarding house.
Other Professional Duties
1. Share in the overall responsibility for the academic progress, personal development, health and safety, discipline and well-being of all pupils.
2. Participate in meetings to discuss curriculum, pastoral and other issues including staff meetings.
3. Attend school events and activities as necessary.
4. Make an appropriate contribution to the planning and management of the subject area.
5. Provide supervision or cover for classes/absent colleagues as necessary.
6. Participate fully in the school Review and Development process and engage in appropriate continuing professional development.
