Consultant Upper GI Surgeon - Specialist Interest in Bariatrics
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant UGI Surgeon with Specialist Interest in Bariatric Surgery to join the surgical department at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.
Main duties of the job
This is a replacement post, created with the aim of maintaining the provision of UGI & Bariatric surgery for the trust. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the emergency surgery pathways, cancer pathways & contribute to the management of routine general surgical cases such as abdominal wall and inguinal hernias. The successful appointee will also be expected to take part in the emergency on-call rota for general surgery admissions as well as providing elective sessions in outpatients, theatres and endoscopy. With the arrival of a new medical school in Kent, the applicant should be committed to teaching and will have the opportunity to engage with future undergraduate and postgraduate training. The position is a whole-time appointment of 11 PA's including on-call commitment (subject to revision of job plan); however, the trust will be happy to consider a 10 PA job plan if this is the wish of the appointee. The applicant will join an established team of General and Gastro-Intestinal Surgeons with sub-specialist interests working across the three hospital sites at Tunbridge Wells Hospital, Maidstone Hospital & the newly acquired Fordcombe Hospital.
Job responsibilities
To provide a high standard of care to any patient for whom you have clinical responsibility. This will include any patients referred to you and cared for by you personally or by members of your team and, in addition, any patients of consultant colleagues when you are covering on-call or for annual leave.
To participate in clinical and other service activities and developments with the aim of ensuring a high standard of patient care across the Trust.
To work in close co-operation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues, both within and outside the specialty, to provide high quality health care to the Trust's patients, and to make a contribution to future thinking about the Trust's strategic direction.
To participate fully in and share leadership of the clinical governance of the specialty covering its Trust-wide activities. To attend clinical governance half-days as detailed in the Trust's Guide to Job planning unless on agreed leave or while attending emergencies.
To participate actively in departmental audits, sharing co-ordination of audit activities within the department and implementation of change.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* MB BS (or equivalent)
* Registered with GMC
* Possession or within 6 months of CCT
* Distinctions, scholarships, prizes
* Publications in peer-reviewed journals
Personal Skills
* Evidence of Leadership
* An understanding of corporacy in the NHS
Research
* An understanding of general principles, scientific method and interpretation of literature
* Evidence of personal research projects and their presentation
