We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Principal Design Engineer and a Principal Structures Engineer to provide technical leadership within our engineering team. This role will be responsible for ensuring excellence in analytical and design work, driving innovation, and supporting business development efforts. The successful candidate will champion best practices, mentor engineers, and contribute to the overall growth of the company.
Role Overview:
This role will be responsible for ensuring excellence in analytical and design work, driving innovation, and supporting business development efforts.
Key Responsibilities:
General:
* Govern analytical work within the organization, ensuring compliance with policies, requirements, and standards.
* Champion, lead, and introduce innovative analytical tools and techniques.
* Provide expert knowledge in specific technical specialisms.
* Maintain legislative understanding relevant to the area of expertise.
Design Role Responsibilities:
* Lead the development of 3D CAD designs from initial concept through to detailed design.
* Review and provide recommendations on design challenges and technical feasibility.
* Lead internal and external design reviews focused on analytical work.
* Expertise in composite material selection, laminate design, and manufacturing considerations for composite structures.
* Development of composite structures with a focus on weight optimization and structural integrity.
* Check and approve technical drawings and schemes.
* Provide support to the Chief Engineer in key design activities.
Analysis Role Responsibilities:
* Support and enhance engineering expertise within the organization.
* Maintain and enforce analytical governance within the relevant technical field.
* Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of components and assemblies, including linear, non-linear, and thermal analysis.
* Advanced structural analysis of composite materials, including progressive damage modeling, failure prediction (e.g., Hashin, Puck, Tsai-Wu), and ply-by-ply stress analysis.
* Understanding of composite failure modes and techniques for improving structural performance.
* Evaluate analysis data and guide design alterations to meet safety, performance, and efficiency standards.
* Perform hand calculations and develop supporting analytical models for initial concept analysis and validation of detailed models.
* Support the Technical Authority in ensuring technical accuracy and compliance.
Project Management:
* Manage multiple technical projects, balancing business priorities effectively.
* Communicate project progress to Senior Management and stakeholders.
Business Development:
* Actively contribute to business development initiatives.
* Secure new business from existing and new customers.
* Act as the key customer account holder and primary point of contact.
* Lead proposal development, including technical content, project planning, and cost estimation.
Technical Reporting:
* Serve as the lead author of technical reports and documentation.
* Check and approve technical reports to ensure accuracy and quality.
Communication:
* Lead by example, adhering to business best practices.
* Develop and deliver technical presentations for customer engagement and internal discussions.
* Liaise directly with customers and suppliers to facilitate project success.
* Present findings and technical details to internal teams and external stakeholders.
Leadership & Mentorship:
* Drive innovative approaches to analytical and design challenges.
* Mentor and coach engineers to develop technical skills and expertise.
* Delegate and oversee technical work packages across the engineering team.
* Identify and arrange training opportunities for team development.
Continuous Professional Development:
* Stay up-to-date with advancements in technical tools and methodologies relevant to the field.
* Actively work towards advanced professional accreditation (e.g., Fellow status in a relevant institution).
Qualifications & Experience:
* Bachelor's, Master’s or post-graduate level degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or a related engineering discipline.
* Extensive experience in design and/or structural analysis, ideally in sectors such as aeronautical, space, automotive, renewables, naval, or nuclear.
* Expertise in CAD software (e.g., CATIA, SolidWorks, Siemens NX) and/or simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus, CFD software).
* Strong background in engineering governance and compliance with industry standards.
* Proven track record in project management and business development.
* Exceptional leadership, mentoring, and communication skills.
* Chartered Engineer (CEng) status preferred or actively working towards it.
