Radiology Physics provides clinical and non-clinical scientific and technical services in diagnostic radiology physics and the ionising radiation protection of patients, staff and the general public to the Trust and to client health care organisations throughout the region.
The post holder will provide expert scientific and technical advice, as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE), to ensure that NHS Trusts and other organisations can meet their statutory obligations.
The post holder will also be the lead expert in all aspects of the Radiology Physics equipment and quality control programme. They will maintain, manage and develop a comprehensive independent commissioning, quality assurance and calibration programme for all ionising radiation equipment throughout the region. They will also provide leadership in one specific area of the group's work.
The post holder will provide support for the research, optimisation and development of radiological techniques with the aim of improving patient management and patient and staff safety.
This post is based at the University Hospital but duties are performed at hospitals and other health care premises throughout the region. Client organisations are principally all the NHS hospitals and community dental clinics within this sub-region. They also include some private hospitals, dental and veterinary practices with whom the Trust has contracts.
The Department participates in the National Arrangements for Incidents involving Radiation (NAIR). In this case duties may be performed anywhere in the region and clients include the emergency services.
Main duties of the job
* Proactively participate in workforce development including selection, recruitment and retention of staff.
* Maintain, manage and develop a comprehensive independent commissioning, quality assurance and calibration programme for all ionising radiation equipment throughout the region.
* Undertake the daily allocation of clinical scientists and technical staff to specific equipment surveys. Re-allocate staff in response to sickness, annual leave etc.
Job responsibilities
* To initiate, plan and introduce innovative techniques for the evaluation, commissioning and continuing quality control of diagnostic x-ray equipment (including x-ray, CT, fluoroscopy and mammography).
* Provide leadership in one specific area of the groups work, by providing in-depth expertise in this area, planning group strategy and in developing new ways of working, and implementing these into the routine procedures of the Group.
* Undertake evaluation tests, commissioning tests and quality control measurements on a wide range of x-ray equipment, to ensure that it is safe to use on patients and is capable of providing the required clinical information. Provide written reports and advice to radiology managers, radiographers, radiologists and others. Liaise with manufacturers representatives where necessary.
* Undertake the assessment of patient dose and dose audits.
* Provide expert scientific and technical MPE advice and support to radiology departments and other users of X-ray equipment, including matters such as compliance with the regulations, optimisation of radiation dose and image quality, equipment specifications and procurement. Also to assist with the resolution of any problems that may arise.
* Provide specialist technical advice to radiology managers and others for the procurement of high capital value complex clinical equipment.
