Job overview
The post holder will be accountable for ensuring the management and delivery of the Decontamination services across Trust sites ensuring that medical devices and equipment are appropriately decontaminated in accordance with extant legislation, standards and national guidelines including the Health Technical Memoranda framework.
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring local decontamination practices, in all areas of the Trust, are in accordance with Trust policy.
He/she will also be responsible for collaborating with Kings Facilities Management (KFM) a wholly owned subsidiary of the Trust, in overseeing the management of third-party providers for Sterile Services and for the delivery of Endoscopy services. This includes involvement in the liaison and performance of PFI companies’ responsible for the ownership of buildings and equipment.
The post holder will be required to act as professional lead for the Trust, providing expert advice on decontamination issues as required, working with colleagues, multi-disciplinary teams and users to improve systems and processes to ensure they are responsive to service needs.
Main duties of the job
* Responsible for the implementation of the Trust Decontamination Policy; ensuring all nominated USERS within the Trust have SOPs for medical devices not processed centrally, and advise on the content and application as required ensuring they take account of any national guidelines e.g., ultrasound probes He/she should ensure that the SOPs clearly define the roles and responsibilities of all personnel who may be involved in the use, installation and maintenance of any decontamination equipment.
* Facilitate and lead quality audits to ensure that all relevant policies are complied with, and operational procedures are regularly reviewed and updated. Check practices demonstrate compliance with, as a minimum, Essential Quality Requirements having a plan to progress to Best Practice especially intra-cavity probes.
* Ensure that Decontamination of reusable medical devices takes place in dedicated facilities where possible or in locations designed to minimize risks of cross contamination.
* Provide audit reports and general updates to the Bimonthly Decontamination committee meetings.
* Present a quarterly report to the Infection Prevention and Control Meeting escalating any risks issues relating to patient safety.
* Prepare an update on Decontamination for the DIPC contributing to the annual IPC report for the Executive Board.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* Ensure that Decontamination of reusable medical devices takes place in dedicated facilities where possible or in locations designed to minimize risks of cross contamination.

* Responsible for the review of decontamination related manufacturers’ instructions for use (IFUs) submitted to the Trust Standardization Committee, as part of the approval process for the management of medical devices, ensuring the methods recommended are available to the Trust.
* To take part in monthly monitoring operational and contracts meetings with third party providers in collaboration with KFM managed services.
* Management of appropriate role specific training to Trust staff e.g. infection prevention and control staff
* The position requires a strategic approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of change necessary to achieve the Trust’s objectives.
* The post holder will be expected to work closely with their colleagues and work alongside all sub-divisions of Capital, Estates and Facilities based at Denmark Hill.

* To liaise with related disciplines on decontamination to ensure a co-ordinate and integrated approach is adopted. Key departments will include Microbiology, Control of Infection, Health and Safety, Estates, External bodies, and Authorised Engineer (AED).
* To ensure the Trust/CEF is advised of any changes in legislation, standards and guidance and any required action.
* When required, investigate Field Safety Notices (FSN’s), Medical Devices Alerts (MDA’s) and adverse incidents involving possible medical equipment failure.
Person specification
Education & Qualifications
* Evidence of other specialist management training to diploma level or the equivalent level of experience in an operational management role
* Master’s Degree in a relevant field or an equivalent level of experience
* Chartered Member of the Institute of Decontamination Sciences
Knowledge and Experience
* Experience of quality systems and auditing procedures
* Significant Sterile Services and Endoscope Decontamination management experience
* Significant experience at a management level including project management, business planning, change management, multidisciplinary working, financial management, human resource management and performance management.
* Significant knowledge of ISO standards and their implementation including the Medical Device Regulations

* High level analytical skills and the ability to manipulate and assess qualitative and quantitative data and draw appropriate conclusions
* Excellent communication skills, written and oral combined with the ability to communicate potentially highly complex, sensitive issues with colleagues in an effective and positive manner
