The opportunity: As an Associate Structural Packaging Designer, you will act as a creative strategist leading the design of sustainable packaging from concept to completion. You will gather project information from Smurfit Westrock commercial (sales) teams, project managers, and directly from customers, create designs in the Computer Assisted Design (CAD) program, solicit and incorporate customer feedback, and create prototypes for customer and manufacturing approval. The Associate Structural Packaging Designer needs to be organized, communicate well with both internal and external partners, and be able to work autonomously with respect to deadlines. This person can be a recent graduate up to 3 years of relevant experience but most importantly, has strong technical competency and a passion for the packaging industry.
What you need to succeed:
* Some CAD experience, capable of learning Artios CAD packaging software and professional proficiency in Microsoft Office products – PowerPoint, Word, Excel required.
* Adobe Creative Suite knowledge is advantageous.
* Capable of learning and comfortable with operating equipment including CAD Tables and 3D printers.
* Capable of learning carton manufacturing processes and limitations and can become a design expert for estimating and production teams.
* Familiarity with beverage package filling lines, supply chains, automation, and/or fit-for-use testing is a plus.
* Active participation in design ideation to support customer or platform innovation projects.
* Maintains highest levels of customer satisfaction in managing design-related responsibilities for key accounts and projects through timely and independent execution of deliverables including prototypes, white samples, and graphic mock-ups.
* Effective and clear communication, including clear expectation-setting with the Commercial team and customers, customer-facing articulation of design intent, feedback and coaching of fellow designers, and collaborative optimization with Operations.
* A degree in Product Design, Packaging Design, Design Engineering, or a specialized Engineering Degree based in mechanical engineering disciplines from an accredited institution is preferred and/or a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience.
* Ability and willingness to travel up to 10-20% for internal meetings and externally to customer sites, including international travel.
