Blood Transfusion Manager - BHH, GHH & SH
The landscape of University Hospitals Birmingham is changing. October sees our new 45 million elective hub at Solihull Hospital opening, Heartlands Treatment Centre is now fully operational, and our services continue to expand at Good Hope and QE.
Due to retirement, we are looking for a new Blood Transfusion Laboratory Manager to manage the Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull sites, but will work closely with the Blood Transfusion Manager at QEH as well as the UHB transfusion practitioner team.
Applicants for the post will need to have an extensive knowledge of Blood Transfusion, laboratory and information systems, plus a developed understanding of the requirements for UKAS, MHRA and Quality Management Systems. You will need to be enthusiastic, maintain and develop high standards of quality and enjoy working as part of a large team, which is further expanding with the recruitment of additional BMS posts to support the service and expansions. There are many new developments taking place in Blood Transfusion including the role out of a fully automated blood fridge system and bedside administration as well as ongoing IT infrastructure updates.
You must be HCPC registered, possess a Degree and MSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent, FIBMS or Higher specialist Diploma.
We encourage further study, scientific posters/papers, and CPD are strongly supported.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will have operational oversight and autonomy within Blood Transfusion at Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital. They will be the lead specialist in Blood Transfusion, responsible for providing expert advice and support to service users locally, regionally and nationally. They provide professional management leadership for BMSs, MLAs and other Scientific and Support staff. They will liaise closely with the Head BMS and Clinical Service Lead, providing timely and accurate information concerning all aspects of service provision.
This remit includes ensuring the technical and scientific robustness of analytical equipment and techniques, system troubleshooting and maintenance of turnaround times, competency of staff, interpreting laboratory results and providing appropriate advice, the maintenance and review of internal and external quality assurance and compliance with national quality standards e.g. ISO 15189, and also maintenance of our MHRA license, the efficient use of financial, material and human resources and ensuring there are adequate numbers of trained staff to maintain a 24hr service.

Essential
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement that is ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
* MSc Biomedical Science or equivalent academic achievement ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
* Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HPC guidelines.
* Post registration specialty training in accordance with Institute of Biomedical Science guidelines.
* Evidence of specialist, advanced and update training
* State registration with Health Professions Council (HPC).
* Completion of post registration specialist competency portfolio.
Experience
Essential
* Evidence of continuing professional development and discipline specific proficiency for HPC registration.
* Demonstration of relevant experience commensurate with post requirements.

* An advanced, highly specialist knowledge of:
* Biomedical Science theory and practice (Haematology, Transfusion, Haemostasis & Thrombosis, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Cellular Pathology as appropriate).
