Job Summary
Now is a great time to work in the NHS and with such a focus on the importance of mental health, Mental Health Nurses are really standing out. Forest Lodge is a 22 bed male Forensic low secure unit which comprises of 2 wards, the Assessment ward and the Rehabilitation ward.
You'll be a key member of the multi-disciplinary team, ensuring that service users have access to socially inclusive community services: so that they are engaged with society as much as they wish to be, helping service users to gain confidence about making choices and decisions, promoting recovery so that service users can go on to live as independently and autonomously as possible by supporting them to achieve the things they want to, such as living in their own home, getting a job, starting a family etc.
You will also ensure greater involvement between service users and their carers in any important decision making that affects their interests.

You must be able lead, motivate and support the staff team, show a commitment to a non-punitive, value based approach to care delivery.

Job Responsibilities
* To ensure that comprehensive nursing assessment is carried out for all assigned patients to identify individual care needs.
* To ensure that each allocated patient has a comprehensive, clear and up-to-date plan of care with specified objectives designed to meet the individuals identified care needs.
* To ensure that comprehensive and up to date risk assessment and management plans are available and accessible to the Team in support of patient care, that encompass all areas of risk, but paying particular regard to harm to self and others, vulnerability and potential for absconding.
* As an identified Named Nurse, ensure that care planning and management is delivered in a collaborative approach with the patient and their carers, in line with existing care pathways and the care programme approach.
* To ensure that patient care is delivered in a manner consistent with available local guidelines relating to care pathways.
* To ensure patients are aware of the content of their care plans, and have contributed to their development and evaluation.
* To ensure that identified plans of care for assigned patients are implemented consistently within the nursing team.
* Undertake appropriate decision making in relation to the Mental Health Act, and Code of Practice with regard to patient care, for both detained and informal patients as influenced by risk assessments and MDT decision making.
* Undertake appropriate action and decision making in relation to the Mental Capacity act and DOLS as part of the MDT approach.
* To take a positive approach to responding to patients in acute distress, adopting principles of diffusion and de-escalation. Where physical interventions or restraint are required, to approach in line with available guidance and approved techniques, providing for the safety and dignity of the patient(s).
* To take positive approaches to patient engagement. Where undertaking specific observations of patients, to do so in line with the available policies and guidelines.
* To ensure that an appropriate therapeutic environment is maintained within the Ward.
* To ensure that practice in relation to medicines is in line with local guidelines, individual professional requirements and responsibilities, and ensures individual patient involvement, engagement and concordance.
* To provide advice and support to ex-patients of the Service, in line with guidelines relating to the provision of 24 hour accessible advice and support to mental health service users.
* As a member of the Team, to contribute to providing a quality environment for patients in relation to safety, dignity, comfort and day to day activities.
* Take active and positive approaches to supporting and encouraging patients with their dietary needs, over the 24 hour period.
* Assist medical staff with routine examinations.
* To respond to spillages of waste or bodily fluids in line with health and safety guidelines and control of infection guideline.
* To use relevant information in support of patient care and care planning, including available electronic information systems.
* To audit care plans on a regular basis using an established audit tool.
* To ensure that the care given is regularly and thoroughly evaluated against the identified care objectives in order that the effectiveness of care plans can be maintained.
* Ensure that their practice, and that of those junior to them, remains within the boundaries set by local and national policy, the NMC and statute law.
* To participate with colleagues in the promotion of an active learning environment in order to maintain and develop high standards of professional and clinical practice.
* To support the development of junior staff and learners, through effective role modelling, mentorship (for students/ learners), supervision and professional leadership.
* To participate in own supervision, annual appraisals and personal development planning.
* To undertake necessary essential training, (for example life support, general health and safety, prevention and management of violence and aggression) over a suitable period of time, and additional training as identified in support of clinical and professional development.
* To regularly take charge of the ward in the absence of the person with continuing responsibility and, in doing so; Oversee and direct the interventions, actions and practice of individual staff on duty and Ensure that the relevant policies and procedures are followed in relation to patient care and ward safety.
* To ensure that during any period of a shift when in charge of medicines, the custody of all drugs is in accord with the Trust Policy and procedures.
