Band 7 Highly Specialist Physiotherapist
Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust
An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced physiotherapist to join the Prehabilitation Service at BHRUT. The post holder will cover, develop and expand the current prehabilitation service for people with cancer. We are looking for an enthusiastic physiotherapist with an oncology or surgical background and a specialist interest in prehabilitation to develop the prehabilitation service at BHRUT. The Band 7 Physiotherapist will lead the prehabilitation service for the Trust working with the Occupational Therapist, Dietician and support workers in this newly developed service alongside the Macmillan Living with and Beyond Cancer team to provide a high quality, evidence-based prehabilitation physiotherapy service. They will prioritise referrals, co-ordinate appointments, assess patients, and treat patients managing physical consequences of cancer and its treatment. They should have an excellent knowledge of the theory and practice of prehabilitation and post-surgical care including the key elements of exercise prescription, psychological support, and healthy diet, and the use of supported self-management strategies and onward referral. This post provides an exciting opportunity to work within a newly created team providing high quality treatment to cancer patients and the opportunity to develop and expand the service.
Main Duties of the Job
This position involves working collaboratively with other members of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) in running a prehabilitation service and improving the cancer services for patients living with and beyond cancer. Leadership and clinical support will be provided by the Macmillan Living with and Beyond Cancer Lead, the BHRUT Lead Cancer Nurse, and the Acute Respiratory, Critical Care and Surgical Clinical Lead Therapist.
The post holder will autonomously manage a clinical caseload within the BHRUT surgical cancer pathway for all cancer types, using evidence-based/client-centered principles to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate interventions in the designated setting.
The post holder will play a key clinical leadership role in the Prehabilitation Service for patients on the surgical cancer pathway at BHRUT by contributing, planning, developing, and evaluating the service within their area of specialism. This will include leading in audit and service evaluation, including data collection and establishing clear outcome measures to inform future development of a sustainable model of care and associated business cases.
About Us
We're an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we're no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we're proud of and that our patients are happy with.
Many of our 8,000 staff - who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we're proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London - more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023.
Patients across north east London are benefitting from two new state-of-the-art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.
We're looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It'll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.
