Job Title: Casual Stop Smoking Advisor
Salary Range: £10-£20 per hour
Casual, Part-Time
Location: Wandsworth
Other Essential Information: Various locations across the boroughs of Richmond and Wandsworth, including remote/home-working.
Objective of Role:
As a Casual Stop Smoking Advisor, you will deliver tailored, structured, evidence-based clinical support services to smokers who wish to quit or reduce harm through harm reduction strategies with the aim of quitting for good. You will work in compliance with the Local stop smoking services and support guidance, the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training standards, The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline (NG209) and maintain the highest standards of care and professionalism. Hours will vary based on service demand and your availability.
About the Role:
Service Delivery:
1. Deliver smoking cessation support in various settings, including 1-on-1 sessions, GP surgeries, group settings, telephone support, National campaigns and mobile outreach clinics.
2. Recommend Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and give out vouchers to clients based on your professional judgment.
3. Work autonomously while maintaining accurate records and staying up to date with smoking cessation developments.
4. Actively participate in events such as No Smoking Day, Stoptober promotional stands etc. to encourage new clients to access our services.
Service Operations and Performance:
1. Network and collaborate to raise awareness of the Richmond and Wandsworth Stop Smoking Services.
2. Maintain meticulous and secure records of client and group sessions.
3. Identify and secure suitable community venues for service delivery.
4. Contribute to the collection and distribution of performance data.
5. Assess the needs of the target population and propose service improvements.
Service Quality and Performance:
1. Suggest areas for potential service enhancements.
2. Assist in developing action plans and work plans.
3. Collect and record data related to service outcomes.
4. Promote service improvement and quality initiatives.
5. Ensure equipment, such as CO monitors, are suitable for use. Attend update and refresher training on an ad-hoc basis.
Personal Responsibilities:
1. Foster effective communication within the Richmond and Wandsworth Stop Smoking Services and Health Improvement Service.
2. Engage in annual performance reviews and regular check-ins with your line manager.
3. Contribute to the implementation of new programmes.
4. Address issues by consulting with knowledgeable sources and evaluating different alternatives to achieve the best possible outcomes.
5. Able to commute to various locations as work demands.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Comply with all council Codes of Practice, including the Code of Conduct, data protection, and health and safety policies and take all mandatory training as required.
2. Promote Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, and report inappropriate behaviour or discrimination.
3. Demonstrate awareness and compliance with child protection and safeguarding principles.
4. Fulfil other reasonable duties corresponding with the post's grade and responsibilities.
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
1. Certification in Smoking Cessation: Completion of a recognised smoking cessation course or certification program, demonstrating expertise in helping individuals quit smoking.
2. Healthcare Background: A background in healthcare, such as being a registered nurse, pharmacist, or other healthcare professional, can provide a solid foundation for understanding the physiological and psychological aspects of smoking cessation.
3. Behavioural Change Training: Training in behavioural change techniques is essential for addressing the psychological aspects of smoking addiction and assisting individuals in adopting healthier habits.
4. Knowledge of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT): Familiarity with various NRT options, such as patches, gums, and lozenges, etc. and the ability to guide individuals on their appropriate use.
5. Understanding of Prescription Medications: Knowledge of prescription medications used for smoking cessation, including their benefits, side effects, and suitability for different individuals.
6. Counselling and Communication Skills: Effective communication and counselling skills are crucial for building rapport with clients, understanding their motivations, and providing support throughout the quitting process.
7. A demonstrable interest in public health and health improvement and prevention.
8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
9. Flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Please note that DBS screening is required to undertake the role.
