Job Summary
At Macclesfield District General Hospital we are excited to welcome a Consultant Acute Physician to join a dynamic, expanding, and forward-thinking Acute Medical team. The successful applicant will join a team of 4 Consultant Acute Physicians during an exciting stage of growth and expansion for the service. With the guidance of our inspiring clinical team, this role will allow you the opportunity to enhance your skills, leadership, and confidence while holding management and clinical responsibility for patients on the Medical Admissions Unit (MAU).
The new Consultant Acute Physician will join our outstanding team in the delivery of acute medical care across the Medical Admissions Unit (MAU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and will support the Emergency Department staff with assessments of patients with acute medical problems. Your expertise will play a key role in leading and coordinating the junior medical staff to ensure that patients are assessed and admitted or discharged in line with Emergency Department targets.
Hours per week: 10 PA's
Main duties of the job:
1. MAU ward cover - Managing admissions and flow of between 30 - 35 patients per day.
2. Monday to Friday until 8pm, working as the Physician of the Day (POD) 1x weekly.
3. Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) cover - on call cover on Friday.
4. Emergency department in reach.
5. Weekend post take ward rounds.
6. Medical Sub-specialty interest OPD clinics.
7. General virtual ward rounds.
8. Play a vital role in the training, mentoring, and leading of junior medical staff with the assessment and management of acutely unwell medical patients, and contribute to MRCP PACES teaching.
9. Postgraduate medical training of foundation year doctors and specialty trainees while working towards GIRFT recommendations as well as Royal College frameworks for Acute Medicine patients.
10. To be able to work flexibly and provide high-quality care with particular emphasis on developing appropriate services to meet clinical needs utilizing available resources.
11. Collaborative working specifically with colleagues in primary care and the community to ensure effective management of acutely unwell patients.
12. Education and training of medical students, doctors, and professionals allied to medicine including Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACP's).
13. Demonstration and engagement with the principles of clinical governance.
14. Maintaining robust systems for effective clinical audit in the specialty and general medicine, as appropriate.
15. Developing services as indicated by recommendations of the Royal College of Physicians, NICE, and specialist societies.
Minimum Requirements:
Registration:
* Full GMC registration with a current license to practice.
Qualifications:
* MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
* Desirable: MD/PhD.
Clinical Experience:
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST (Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training) in general (internal) medicine.
* Broad range of recent experience in general (internal) medicine.
* Training and experience to manage an acute medical 'take'.
* Expertise in relevant practical procedures e.g., insertion of intercostal drains, central venous lines, & lumbar puncture.
* Evidence of ability to change clinical practice and service provision.
* Up to date practice in line with recent initiatives.
Teaching:
* Experience of successfully supervising and teaching resident doctors and other staff.
