Key Responsibilities:
1. Support the ward manager in ensuring effective management of the ward, including day-to-day shift management and bed management.
2. Deliver a high standard of patient care daily, providing clinical and managerial leadership and teaching to nursing and support staff.
3. Assess care needs and develop, implement, and evaluate care programs for patients with severe mental illness, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
4. Provide leadership and act as a role model to the team, offering quality evidence-based nursing advice, support, and care for patients with mental health needs and their carers.
5. Support the ward manager with overall responsibility for management and leadership of the ward, including administration and coordination of care programs.
6. Ensure appropriate staff resources are planned and deployed to meet safe staffing requirements through rota management using Health Roster.
7. Adjust rotas as necessary to address staff absence and increased observation requirements.
8. Undertake assessments of individuals with complex mental health presentations, including those at higher risk.
9. Develop care and recovery plans in collaboration with patients.
10. Offer specialist nursing assessment and advice as required.
11. Lead therapeutic group work programs as necessary.
12. Administer medication in compliance with Trust procedures and NMC Guidance.
13. Ensure the safe custody of all patients, supervising them within the hospital, grounds, and community as required.
14. Provide clinical and managerial leadership on the ward.
15. Assess and manage ongoing risks identified during assessments in collaboration with patients and carers.
16. Regularly review risk factors and adjust management strategies as necessary.
17. Maintain effective functioning of the clinical environment, including resource management and safe staffing levels on each shift.
18. Set clinical and educational standards and monitor their maintenance.
19. Conduct regular audits of clinical activity and standards, developing action plans for improvements.
20. Work within the NMC Code of Practice and professional guidelines.
21. Maintain up-to-date professional competence within the specific environment.
22. Attend meetings, multi-disciplinary ward rounds, and case conferences, presenting information as necessary.
