The Role
The Curlew Connections Communities and Engagement Officer will re-connect people with curlews in the Welsh landscape and inspire them to help in reversing their rapid population decline.
You will broaden the appeal of curlews and encourage a diverse range of people to gain a greater understanding and love for curlews in their landscape.
We are looking for someone who is passionate about promoting understanding and awareness of curlews, particularly the conservation of breeding curlews.
You will work closely with the Curlew and People Officer in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park to influence increased appreciation of the curlew and its breeding requirements. A core element of the role is to inspire and enable a range of audiences, including the farming community, young people, older generations, and various communities, to build strong local support for breeding curlews.
Key Responsibilities
Assist the Curlew & People Officer, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park staff, and colleagues within the Curlew Connections Wales project to deliver engagement activities that build a greater understanding and appreciation of curlew recovery as described in a Project Engagement Plan. Target audiences include the farming community, local and national communities, recording groups, schools, colleges, and the elderly community.
1. Bringing the stories of the curlew to life through innovative events and experiences that inspire communities.
2. Working directly with the farming and land-managing community to identify Curlew Champions and foster good practice.
3. Organising dynamic interpretive events and creating materials based on the current material of Gylfinir Cymru.
4. Providing education and learning opportunities for primary and secondary-aged pupils and other youth groups, particularly agricultural colleges and Young Farmers Clubs.
5. Organising celebration events for curlews across a variety of mediums and communities.
6. Identifying new and collaborative ways of working across communities to ensure more people become involved with curlew recovery, including:
7. National and local citizen science programmes.
8. New volunteering opportunities and training for rural communities near current curlew populations.
9. A range of inclusive activities for target audiences, including older people and specific local activities for organisations with an older age profile, e.g., the Women's Institute and U3A.
10. Developing inter-generational projects within communities, such as oral history records of memories of curlew in farming communities undertaken by younger generations.
11. Utilising best practices to develop methods of communicating with target audiences that lead to meaningful engagement and drive change focused on outputs and impacts.
12. Managing multiple projects and working with a range of contractors, including translators, illustrators, designers, artists, creative agencies, and goods providers.
As part of this work, you are expected to attend meetings with project partners and the project delivery team regularly to share ideas and contribute to the delivery of curlew recovery in Wales.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Criteria
1. Degree in a relevant subject or 2 years of relevant experience.
2. Specialist knowledge of developing communications and engagement strategies, and how to effectively and creatively interpret nature and heritage.
3. An appreciation of the importance of the farming community and how best to influence it in line with their commitment to Wales-wide curlew recovery.
4. Experience of planning, delivering, and evaluating events, interpretation, exhibitions, and print/digital content.
5. Ability to produce a range of interpretative material, such as digital, print, signage, sculpture, audio trails, film, and other creative outputs.
