Position Summary:
Reporting to the Program Managers in Environmental Health, the EH Seasonal Programs Student will support the operation of seasonal programs within the Environmental Health Department including Vector Borne Disease Surveillance, Beach Water Quality Testing, and other seasonal or emerging programs deemed appropriate. The EH Seasonal Program Student collects samples and specimens, and forwards them to the public health laboratory for analysis, sets and collects mosquito trapping equipment throughout Windsor and Essex County, and participates in public health education and promotional activities. This position supports the ongoing operations of the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit while working in accordance with the Ministry of Health’s Ontario Public Health Standards and associated Protocols and guidelines, the Health Protection and Promotion Act, its Regulations, and any other pertinent legislation.
Position Responsibility:
The EH Seasonal Programs Student will assist Staff Public Health Inspectors within the department and support the efficient operations of seasonal programs including, but not limited to, Beach Water Quality monitoring and Mosquito Surveillance.
Position Qualifications:
Education, training, & experience
* To be eligible for the position, students must be enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution or have graduated within the past 6 months in the area of biologic sciences, chemistry, environmental sciences, or health studies (related fields).
* Enrolment in an approved environmental health program leading to certification as a Public Health inspector in Canada is considered an asset.
Other Requirements:
* Working knowledge of Ontario Public Health Standards, Health Protection and Promotion Act, and relevant legislation.
* Proficiency with current computer applications (Examples: Microsoft Office-Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet; E-mail).
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
* Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize workloads.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Satisfactory vulnerable sector police information search.
* Some evening and weekend work may be necessary.
* A valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, access to a reliable motor vehicle during working hours, and 1 million dollars in liability insurance.
* TB Test.
* WECHU immunization policies must be adhered to.

Band 2
Entry Rate:
1st Year: $21.44
2nd Year: $22.10
3rd Year: $22.74
4th Year: $23.43
