Job Title: School Caretaker Location:Reading Reports To: School Premises Manager Job Purpose: The School Caretaker is responsible for the maintenance, security, and cleanliness of the school premises. This role ensures the school environment is safe, clean, and well-maintained for students, staff, and visitors. Key Responsibilities: 1. Premises Maintenance & Repairs: Carry out routine maintenance and minor repairs (e.g., plumbing, painting, carpentry). Report and coordinate larger maintenance tasks with external contractors. Ensure heating, lighting, and ventilation systems are functioning properly. Perform regular inspections of the school premises to identify any issues. 2. Security & Safety: Open and close the school premises, including setting and disarming alarms. Monitor and ensure the security of the school buildings and grounds. Respond to emergencies, such as break-ins, fire alarms, or leaks. Conduct routine checks on fire safety equipment and report any concerns. 3. Cleaning & Waste Management: Ensure the school is kept clean, tidy, and hygienic at all times. Oversee cleaning staff and provide support when necessary. Empty bins and manage waste disposal, including recycling procedures. 4. Grounds & Facilities Management: Ensure playgrounds, paths, and external areas are safe and well-maintained. Carry out seasonal duties, such as clearing snow or fallen leaves. Maintain and inspect school furniture, fixtures, and equipment. 5. Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. Carry out risk assessments and routine safety checks. Keep records of maintenance work and report any hazards. Skills & Experience Required: Previous experience in caretaking, facilities management, or maintenance (preferred). Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and general DIY repairs. Strong awareness of health and safety regulations. Ability to work independently and use initiative. Good communication and organizational skills. Willingness to work flexible hours when needed (e.g., school events, emergencies).
