This post requires the successful applicant to undertake venepuncture primarily on patients as part of their journey through the Trust. They must organise and prioritise their own workload.

All members of the multi-professional team, including nursing and medical staff, allied health professionals and support workers.
This post involves undertaking venepuncture on patients who present to the department from either clinics or pre-assessment. Testing itself is undertaken off site so extra care must be taken to ensure that the correct bloods are taken appropriately, which are handled and despatched by our Pathology Services team.
The post is for 5 days per week Monday to Friday, from 0900-1700, although these hours are open to a degree of movement.

MAIN RESPONSIBILTITES
1. Collect blood samples by venepuncture from patients on request from clinicians, doctors and nurses, in accordance with the phlebotomy standard operating procedure.
2. Ensure correct care, labelling, recording and maintenance of accurate records for each venepuncture.
3. Have due respect for privacy and dignity
4. Ensure subject is comfortable and relaxed as much as possible, and obtain verbal consent prior to collecting blood samples.
5. If requested, to visit other areas to undertake venepuncture for subjects who are unable to attend the phlebotomy department without delay.
6. Comply at all times with trust relevant data and information governance policy, and respect confidentiality, in particular the confidentiality of electronically stored data, in line with the Data Protection Act.
7. Have a good knowledge and understanding of the purpose of the different blood collection devices, and be able to pass on knowledge to trainees, as required.
8. Be aware and understand the range of blood samples that require special treatment.
9. Accurately create labels using the available IT system and label all samples correctly before calling in the next subject.
10. Reassure patients who are nervous about sampling procedures and apply dressings to wounds created by blood draws.
11. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.
12. Maintain accurate records of all samples taken.
13. Track collected specimens by initialling & dating request form.
14. Be able to use Trust’s Patient Administration System (PAS) to find subject details when needed, e.g. to confirm identity before taking any blood samples.
15. Assist in delivery of samples to the Pathology Department whenever is necessary to do so.
16. Notify nursing staff, preferably nurse in charge, if there are any concerns for the subjects care.
17. Liaise with members of the administrative team and communicate well with team members.
18. When requested, pack and despatch blood samples correctly for transport to the appropriate laboratories.
19. Check that all consumables are always in sufficient quantity, order and re-stock regularly.
20. Ensure the maintenance of good working relationships and communication at all times with patients, relatives and staff of all disciplines.
21. Participate in discussion with the department manager or senior concerning the repair and renewal of equipment and estate.
22. Supervise and train other clinical staff to ensure competency in venepuncture
OTHER DUTIES:
1. Be familiar with and ensure compliance with the trust’s Health and Safety policy and Infection Control policies.
2. Maintain a safe working environment for self, all other staff members, patients and their relatives.
3. Keep clinical area clean and free from clutter.
4. Report all adverse incidents via trust Safeguarding reporting system.
5. Pay due care and attention to the implementation of safety measures in relation to the disposal of sharps, bloods and body fluids.
6. Adhere to relevant trust policies including needle-stick injury policy.
7. Work with the pathology team to carry out specialised point of care tests (POCT) when required.
8. Be able to work with the pathology team and assist whenever there are staff shortages.
9. Keep up to date with all mandatory training.
10. Attend regular staff meetings in the Pathology department.
11. Perform any other appropriate duties which may be required by the department manager which are appropriate to the post.
