Interim Lead Busway Safety Officer – Transport Services

Pay Rate: £25.00 per hour PAYE
Hours per week: 37 Monday – Friday, 9am to 5.30pm
Role Length: This opening assignment is for 4-5 months
City: Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire
The Lead Busway Safety Officer will be responsible for leading all safety-related activities, including risk assessments, incident investigations, and stakeholder engagement. They will also manage the implementation of control measures and ensure regulatory compliance. They will be a key point of contact between contractors and maintenance teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and coordinate all safety activities, e.g. risk assessments,
Inspection of all aspects of the busway operation and its infrastructure, and ensuring that control measures are in place and followed.
Leading the Busway Safety Officers and work with relevant stake holders in implementing control measures. Managing the Busway Safety Team comprising of 3 Busway Safety Officers and a Busway Safety Technical Support Officer. Ensure the Busway operation remains in full compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act
Lead management of Busway incident reporting through the County Council Health and Safety management system. To ensure timely and system wide implementation of lessons learnt.
Apply initiative and technical judgement to facilitate the resolution of safety and associated issues as they arise. Oversee a coordinated, safe systems approach to the Busway.
Maintain stakeholder relations and influence, as part of a safe systems approach, including with bus operators, emergency services and contractors.
Monitor Reported defects and ensure timely resolution of safety issues by the Busway Safety Team.
Track and monitor maintenance schedules, ensuring compliance.
Monitoring management and regular reporting of operational and key performance indicators.
Deal promptly and efficiently with enquiries and correspondence.
Support and maintain a methodical approach to dealing with and keeping relevant inspection records.
Liaise with colleagues across the directorate and the Council to ensure the Busway Safety service is delivered in the most efficient, effective and coordinated manner.
Qualifications:
Degree such as environmental health or occupational safety and health/risk management.
NEBOSH (Occupational Health and Safety) or IOSH (Managing Safely in Rail).
Skills & Experience:
Minimum of 12 months recent experience in a similar role, or context and ideally within a public sector organisation.
Experience working with busways, tramways and/or railways.
At least 2 years’ experience in engineering, infrastructure maintenance, or a safety role related to guided transportation systems; qualifications in transport safety or maintenance
Good communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to respond clearly and courteously, even in difficult situations.
Knowledge of the Railway and Transport Safety Act 2003, and Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (Safety) Regulations 2006.
Have the ability to visit offices and sites, when necessary, where public transport is limited.
Strong IT skills including Microsoft packages or equivalent (e.g. G Suite).
Full UK driving licence required for this role.
