What is the job?
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced General Manager with a strong background in biomass fuel production to lead Operations across our Tilbury asset base. The ideal candidate will own and be accountable for health and safety, fuel production processes, regulatory compliance (H&S/Environmental), and all operational management, including feedstock acceptance, stock management and fuel production, across our Tilbury Assets including the maintenance and performance of Tilbury’s fuel production facility ensuring the efficient use of resources.
The candidate will be a strong leader with the ability to lead the operational teams as well as owning the operational interface with the fuel offtake customer and have a demonstrable track record for embedding a safety-centric culture within operational teams. This role requires a strategic thinker with a track record including operational leadership, client management, fuel production and waste management within the wood industry, they will possess excellent planning and communication skills.
Experience within an outsourced or contracted O&M environment would be advantageous.
Working Schedule: Monday to Friday, 45 hours per week.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Management:
o Responsible for Health and Safety.
o Responsible for daily operations of the Tilbury 1 and Tilbury 2 facilities including acceptance of waste wood, stocking, fuel production and maintenance and availability of the Tilbury 1 production facility, ensuring all processes run safely and efficiently.
o Ensure the required quantity and quality of biomass fuel is produced on a daily basis across Tilbury assets.
o Ensure compliance with safety, health, and environmental regulations.
o Proficient in handling data, reporting and utilisation of KPI’s to drive performance across safety, quality, production and profitability.
o To support and work alongside the Contracts Management Teamin managing the delivery of fuel to customers including resolving day-to-day issues, co-ordination of delivery plans and liaising with customers
o Develop and implement strategies to optimize production and minimize waste.
Biomass Fuel Production:
o Support the coordination and management of all volume to the Customer with excellent communication to external customer and internal teams.
o Be a champion of fuel quality proactively implementing and leading fuel quality control and assurance strategy across Tilbury.
o Identify opportunities for waste reduction, recycling, and reuse.
o Implement and monitor waste management systems and practices.
Stakeholder and Customer Management:
o Develop and own the relationship with TGP (Power Plant Customer) and WBOC (Plant Operator) based on respect and integrity. Own the interface at a senior level ensure excellent customer service and address client concerns promptly.
o Have the confidence and ability to manage plant relationships appropriately – when to take a commercial view and when to enforce contract. Communicate effectively with key stakeholders internally and externally, including suppliers, vendors, and clients, to ensure efficient supply chain operations.
o Develop, implement and maintain a clear strategy for identifying and managing operational and contractual risk. Tracking and reporting daily production performance making the necessary interventions, where necessary escalating issues to Senior leadership.
o Develop an in-depth knowledge of the contractual terms of the TGP fuel supply agreement.
Team Leadership:
o Lead, mentor, and develop the operations team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
o Set performance goals and conduct regular evaluations.
o Track and report daily performance identifying where preventative or reactive interventions may be required and, where necessary, escalating issues to leadership.
o Coordinate with other departments to ensure alignment of operational goals.
Maintenance Planning:
o Plan and schedule regular maintenance for equipment and facilities to ensure optimal operation.
o Coordinate with maintenance teams to minimize downtime, costs and address any operational issues promptly.
o Utilise the MMS to ensure optimum use is being achieved in ensuring the plant is well maintained and compliant with all safety regulations.
Resource Management:
o Ensure effective fiscal control of all budget responsibilities, optimize the use of materials, labour, and equipment.
o Implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising quality or safety.
Continuous Improvement:
o Identify opportunities for and implement actions to improve safety, processes, production, efficiency and product quality. Implement lean manufacturing principles and other best practices.
o Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs).
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Qualifications:
o WAMITAB/COTC.
o IOSH or above.
o Minimum Level 5 in leadership apprenticeship or equivalent.
o Operations Management.,
o Engineering Background (preferred).
Experience:
o Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in operations management, with at least 2 years in biomass fuel production or a related industry.
o Proven track record of managing large-scale production facilities and teams.
Skills and Competencies:
o Strong leadership and people management skills.
o Ability to engage with customers and external stakeholders on operational performance matters.
o Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
o Proficiency in operational management software and tools.
o Knowledge of wood waste management practices and regulations.
o Strong analytical and financial management skills.
o Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
o Ability to effectively communicate with key stakeholders and plan maintenance schedules.
