THE ROLE
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Technical Operator to join the BBC Nations Operations team based in Newcastle. The ops team works alongside editorial colleagues in Regional TV, Local Radio and Online. We collaborate to produce engaging content and strong local journalism with high operational, craft and production standards for brands such as BBC Look North, BBC Radio Tees, BBC Radio Cumbria and BBC Radio Newcastle. We cover one of the most diverse areas of the country, from fascinating and beautiful rural areas such as Northumberland and The Lake District, to major cities and towns like Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Carlisle.

Main Responsibilities
As a senior technical operator you’ll work in a busy news environment and fulfil a variety of operational roles that bring together a polished news programme. In particular we are looking to recruit applicants who can demonstrate either an established graphic design track record or someone who works as part of a multi-discipline environment in which they perform key duties associated with graphic design. You’ll have some experience or knowledge of producing innovative graphics solutions using industry standard Adobe Software, Photoshop, After Effects and Illustrator.
As a creative senior operator with strong design flair you will be expected to take a lead on designing solutions daily for our new state of the art digital set and take on a brief to deliver graphics into news packages for both TV and Online outlets.
Ideally you will also have experience of or an interest in one of the following skill sets:
* On location filming and editing (shoot edit)
Knowledge of directing news bulletins and studio lighting/technical management duties would also be an advantage. Our directors use an automated gallery system and we will look to train you to operate this equipment to be able to deliver bulletins.
Are you the right candidate?
If you’ve got a passion for making fantastic television and great online content we want to hear from you. You should have the creativity, technical knowledge and resilience to work as part of a team and alone. Ideally you will be a creative visual thinker who can solve complex graphics solutions and work within the BBC brand guidelines using Adobe software.
We’re looking for someone who is self-disciplined and can plan ahead but also able to deal with ever changing circumstances and make quick decisions. You’ll need to be alert and confident in live news scenarios, an excellent communicator and be able to develop an understanding of operational equipment and ways of working. You’ll have an interest in our content and services and recognise the importance of being able to adapt in line with changing audience behaviour.
You should have a flexible approach to work, as the demands of this role often involve working some unsocial hours including early/late shifts and weekends.

Salary: £35,000 - £45,000 per annum, depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
