Role Purpose: The role of the Club Doctor is to deliver sports medical services during training and on match days, in collaboration with the Head of Medical, to all London City Lionesses players. The focus will be on First Team players but on occasion you ma ybe required to attend to Academy players. This role will assist with medical screening, illness prevention and management, player health education and the provision of any necessary medical education to the sports medicine and performance teams. The Club Doctor will also support the Lead Physician with carrying out projects related to Clinical Governance and Policy. This is a new position within the business, so the responsibilities are not set in stone. We need someone who can jump in, get things done and work with the senior leadership team to shape the future of the club. Main Duties/ Responsibilities 1. Provide medical support at the training ground and for match cover on 5 days of the week 2. Undertake medical screening during the preseason period. This is to include: • Pre-participation assessment of new players, ensuring details past medical history collated • Cardiac screening • Concussion screening • Mental health screening 3. Work closely with the wider medical and performance team on injury and illness prevention and management, including supporting in diagnosis of illness and injury, and by facilitating onward referral where necessary. 4. Work in collaboration with the wider multi-disciplinary team and with a focus on female health ensure the 360° health and wellbeing of all First Team players. 5. Facilitate medical investigations within the club, or in collaboration with external clinicians or services, including blood tests, urinalysis and other appropriate and necessary bedside clinical tests. 6. To be available on the telephone or email for emergencies and medical questions related to players (personally or via a nominated deputy when unavailable). 7. Accompany players to specialist appointments or scans, when required, to maintain strong relationships with external services and to facilitate optimal communication in the interests of player care. 8. To keep medical records of all consultations and to keep these records confidential and secure. 9. To promote drug-free sport through education of athletes and support staff and by using medication and supplement checks prior to use. 10. To maintain up-to-date clinical appraisal and validation with the GMC which is appropriate to the speciality. 11. Support the Lead Physician and Head of Medical in fulfilling the Clinical Governance requirements as set out by the league’s Performance Support Regulations. 12. Other ad-hoc duties as assigned from time-to-time by management Club Accountabilities 1. To behave in a manner consistent with Club values and policies What we are looking for Qualifications and Training Any specific qualifications or technical requirements listed here will be mandated by league and/or governing body rules ssential · Full GMC registration with an active license to practice · Achieved, or working towards, a qualification in Sport and Exercise Medicine (MSc/ Diploma) or equivalent · Achieved or working towards MFSEM Part 1 · Achieved MFSEM or working towards MFSEM Part 2 · Achieved or working towards MRCP, MRGP, MRCEM or equivalent · Have an up to date full Advanced Emergency Aid qualification; this should be the Level 5 ATMMiF · Have an up to date e.g., ATMMiF-R reaccreditation if ATTMiF qualified · Have appropriate medical indemnity to treat/advise BWC and National team players Desirable · Achieved or working towards a qualification in MSK ultrasound · Achieved or working towards certification in performing MSK (joint) injections · Achieved or working towards DRCOG, or equivalent · UKAD Clean Sport Advisor · Valid FA safeguarding certificate · Previous team doctor experience · Previous experience either in a supporting role or team doctor role in football · Previous experience in a women’s sport environment or supporting female athletes specifically · Undergone training in clinical governance for healthcare or sport Knowledge, Skills and Experience Essential · Completed at least four years in clinical practice including foundation training, with exposure thereafter to either general practice, emergency medicine/critical care, trauma and orthopedics or internal (acute) medicine. · Success in working as part of multidisciplinary teams · Delivered sports medical care in a professional environment, at mass-participation events or directly to elite athletes · Clinical assessment and management of sports injuries and medical problems limiting sport participation · Previous experience providing pitch-side or prehospital/immediate care in sport · Undertaken clinical audits and/or quality improvement project work and has completed the cycle. · Delivered medical education to healthcare or other practitioners e.g., working in sport · An understanding of the health needs of elite athletes and coaches in a high-performance environment · An understanding of leading-edge sports medicine diagnosis and clinical management of elite performers · Knowledge of therapeutics as applied to elite athletes and how these may be applied to illness and injury prevention and management · Knowledge of the fundamental pillars of team medicine, including emergency and trauma support, travel. · Experienced enough to confidently and independently, clinically assess players’ sport-specific musculoskeletal and medical health, in the context of injury or illness, determining appropriate levels of safe participation in training or performance thereafter based on a clear clinical diagnosis (or differential diagnosis). · Comfortable interpreting the relevant findings of clinical investigations when supporting players and the medical MDT in clinical decision-making · Possesses excellent communication skills that support effective and efficient dialogue with patients and athletes; and which support the development of trusting relationships with all, including with coaches and other members of the performance-medical MDT · Ability to work independently but to engage members of the MDT when appropriate, demonstrating both leadership and followership skills · An understanding of the doping rules and regulations in sport · An understanding of the FSEM Code of Conduct · Good presentation and communication skills that can motivate behavioural change and facilitate the development of strong relationships with staff and players alike. · Good problem solving and clinical decision-making skills · Ability to work within scope of practice and within the boundaries of their limitations in experience, knowledge and/or skill. Able to ask for help when needed. · An interest in sport and recognition of the importance of promoting and supporting equality, safeguarding and anti-doping in sport · Prioritises their professional duty of care and clinical responsibilities over being “part of the team · Willingness to engage with and support both personal and team-wide Continued Professional Development (CPD) Desirable · Clinical experience in women’s health, including in general practice, obstetrics and gynecology, sexual health or endocrinology. · Co-ordinated or been involved in the delivery of medical screening to elite athletes, including cardiac screening and concussion baseline testing. · Experience in medicines management, including the independent purchasing, storing, monitoring and dispensing of pharmaceuticals in a healthcare of sport setting · Previously held responsibility for ensuring emergency medical kit, including emergency medicines, are available, usable and in date per National Governing Body standards · Provided Clinical Governance services across pillars of risk, medicolegal principles and staff/people, in either a healthcare or sport environment · Delivered health education to athletes · Has undertaken or contributed to academic research projects or papers · An understanding of the health needs of elite female footballers and coaches in a professional women’s club · A good understanding of female specific health areas including menstrual health, pregnancy and pelvic health · A good understanding of the various sports science and medicine disciplines and their contribution to illness and injury prevention and management, as well as performance · An understanding of leading-edge sports medicine diagnosis and clinical management of elite female performers · Knowledge of therapeutics as applied to elite female athletes and how sex-differences may impact how these may be applied to illness and injury prevention and management · Proficient in bedside MSK sonography – enough to screen for common MSK injury fundings to help guide further investigation and management Characteristics · Passionate about women’s football and broader women’s sport culture. · Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to deal with matrix stakeholders & ambiguity. · High standards of personal integrity and EQ. · Comfortable and able to work on own initiative · Has a learning mindset; is keen to continue their self-development and keep up to date with best practice and learning opportunities · Continually seeks to improve efficiency and performance · Seeks out and embraces new ways of thinking and working – not afraid to fail London City Lionesses is committed to safeguarding, health and safety, and equality, diversity, and inclusion.
