Job summary
We are looking for enthusiastic, compassionate and motivated newly qualified midwives (NQM) and current third year student midwives who are due to qualify by March 2025. Experienced band 5 midwives that wish to join our preceptorship as part of an adapted programme are also welcome to apply.
For NQM we offer a bespoke preceptorship programme delivered by a full time preceptorship lead who will provide you with support and guidance alongside the leadership team. The programmeevaluates highly and has led to an increased midwife retention in our trust, whereby our maternity services have been rated as Good by the CQC.
There are 3 potential models of preceptorship available including:
1. A traditional rotational framework across the inpatient setting, including a community rotation
2. A continuity model of carer pathway
3. A community based preceptorship pathway

Main duties of the job
As a dedicated midwife, your main duties will revolve around providing safe, clinically effective and individualised care to women and birthing people throughout their pregnancy journey.
Working collaboratively as part of a dynamic team, you will be involved in all areas of the maternity services. Depending on your choice and allocation of preceptorship pathway, you may provide care as part of the wider outpatient service including community and continuity settings.
By staying up-to-date with advancemeents in midwifery care and embracing evidence-based practices, you will contribute to the continuous improvements of our services. Job responsibilities
Patient Care:
12. To assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care.
13. To be responsible for the organisation of midwifery care for the patients assigned to you.
14. Utilise the full skills of a midwife practitioner (both integral and extended) to a named caseload of women.
15. To discuss with the Ward Manager / Team Leader, development and changes both midwifery and medical, which affect patients directly and indirectly.
16. Provide care to bereaved patients and their relatives, breaking bad news and supporting other staff undergoing this process.
17. Communicate effectively with multi-disciplinary professionals and agencies, ensuring seamless care at a high standard.
18. To take appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients, including the delegation of patient care to midwives, with the appropriate level skill at all times.
19. To report any accidents/incidents to the Ward Manager / Team Leader and / or Supervisor of Midwives.
20. To ensure that midwifery procedures/guidelines are implemented and maintained in accordance with the policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and national guidance.
21. To ensure that acceptable standards of care are maintained and, where necessary, instigate changes in agreement with the Ward Manager / Team Leader.
22. To be fully conversant in dealing with complex midwifery problems such as child protection issues.
Education and Training:
23. Supervise the training of qualified and unqualified staff, and assist junior staff to develop clinical and managerial skills, in accordance with their level of competence.
24. To participate in teaching for all learners in accordance with their objectives, working closely with local education providers.
25. To provide support and supervision as a mentor to student midwives.
26. To participate in teaching programmes as required.
27. Maintain knowledge of current midwifery practice by reading relevant journals and attending study days where appropriate, promoting research based practice in agreement with ward manager / team leader.
28. To organise and provide training programmes in accordance with the identified needs for the ward.
29. To participate in further post-registration training, as evidenced by developments in practice.
Management:
30. To autonomously manage a caseload within the ward area, making decisions and acting on care needs as they arise.
31. To participate in the co-ordinating and allocating of work to staff
32. To liaise with the midwives in charge of the wards / departments within the Trust to plan workloads and staffing levels as effectively as possible.
33. To inform and discuss with the Ward Manager/Team Leader any problems regarding management and / or care of the woman.
34. Maintain the custody of controlled drugs according to statutory procedure, ordering replacements, checking and administering all drugs according to the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
35. To participate in audit programmes.
36. To take all measures to ensure safety and report all accidents / incidents to the Ward Manager / Senior Midwife / Head of Midwifery and to monitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use of supplies.
37. Maintain accurate management records at all times, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms are used.
38. To assist in other wards / department of the maternity services if the clinical situation or staffing levels demand.
39. To become familiar with ward / department budget and efficient and effective utilisation of resources.
40. Be conversant with Trust and other Policies and Procedures and mechanisms in place for effective care and efficient management of the Maternity Unit.
