Job Description:
This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC three times per week, at minimum.
The Role
We are seeking a Team Leader to lead GM Motorsport's Formula 1 Tire Research and Development group in developing and integrating tire models with simulation using flat track, test, race event, and other applicable data to improve tire performance. Responsibilities include:
1. Collecting information from sources inside and outside GM.
2. Characterizing tire models and interpreting results for motorsports.
3. Attending Motorsports testing domestically and internationally.
4. Cooperating with GM affiliated Motorsports teams.
5. Enabling the transfer of knowledge from Motorsports to GM Production.
In this constantly evolving environment, the team works with innovative testing and analytical technologies to review tire force and moment properties to virtually integrate tire performance for vehicle dynamics simulations.
Joining the GM Motorsports Organization will provide you with the experience to build and maintain successful race teams and the opportunity to showcase your vehicle dynamics and simulation skills.
What You’ll Do:
1. Develop methods to process, review, and qualify tire test data.
2. Attend and support Driver Simulation sessions.
3. Attend Tire Testing.
4. Fit tire test data to models with documented quality.
5. Scale and synthesize models based on feedback from secondary data sources.
6. Develop enhancements to advance tire models, tools, and methods.
7. Enable tire technology transfer.
8. Support integration of tire models with real-time simulation environments.
9. Domestic and International travel is required and expected 1-2x/month for 2-4 days in duration.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
1. Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, CAE, or Software Engineering or related field.
2. 10+ years of engineering experience or completion of an advanced degree.
3. Formula 1 or Professional Motorsports experience.
4. Vehicle dynamics and simulation experience.
5. MATLAB or Python coding for modeling and analysis.
6. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a team and work independently.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
1. Advanced degree in the field of Math or Science – Master’s or PhD.
2. Knowledge of tire model fitting routines from Flat-Trac and WFT data.
3. Experience implementing tire models in real-time simulation environments.
4. Prior F1 Experience.
