English is a thriving subject at the WLFS. We teach a knowledge-based curriculum from Year 7 onwards, designed to inspire in pupils a love of great literature. Pupils study a classic novel, Shakespeare page, and poetry anthology in each year of Key Stage 3. At GCSE, pupils study Julius Caesar, Animal Farm and Jekyll and Hyde for the AQA exam board. Results are strong, with an English subject area Progress 8 of 0.98 in 2024. At A-level, English literature is one of the most popular subjects in the Sixth Form, with two classes running each year, and 62 percent of entries receiving A* to A last in 2024. Many of our sixth form students go on to study literature and related subjects at university.
