The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The Great North Children's Hospital (GNCH) based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary is one of only 14 major Children's Medical Centres in the United Kingdom. It has 245 beds and is the home of specialties that include paediatric intensive care, gastroenterology, renal medicine, respiratory, rheumatology, endocrinology, surgery, immunology, neurology, oncology and infectious diseases. We are also one of only two specialist units in the UK who treat children with immunodeficiency disease.
In 2020, the Children's Holistic Integrated Palliative care Service (CHIPS) team was established at GNCH. The team provides specialist care for infants, children, and young people with life limiting conditions across the whole of the NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board, receiving referrals from a wide range of specialty services.
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a dedicated, compassionate Pharmacist to join the CHIPS team and to assist in the provision of support for complex symptom management and end of life care for infants, children and young people across the region.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will fully integrate into the CHIPS team, attending regular MDT meetings, and will be motivated to develop themselves as a lead clinical pharmacist within this specialist clinical area.
They will assist in the preparation of medicines-related guidelines for use in paediatric palliative care, and will work across the primary-secondary care interface to improve timely access to medicines for children under the care of the CHIPS team. They will also provide clinical pharmacy cover to other wards across GNCH as needed, and input into the care of women under the care of our obstetrics and gynaecology teams at the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
As a leader within the paediatric pharmacy team, the post holder will contribute to the learning and development of other team members and staff across the pharmacy department. They will contribute to medicines cost improvement plans across the children's and women's services directorates and liaise with ward managers to help improve medicines management at ward level. They will also input into the team strategy - reviewing, suggesting and implementing new ways of working to improve efficiency and help the team to provide the highest quality care to our patients.
The post holder will work closely with other areas of pharmacy including Pharmacy Procurement, Medicines Management and the Homecare Team. We require a motivated and enthusiastic team-player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills to join our team.
