TRUSTEE - CHARITY LAW AND COMPLIANCE
Role: Trustee (Charity/Compliance)
Location: Remote/Hybrid with occasional in-person meetings in Surrey/Hampshire.
Time Commitment: 6–12 days per year, including Board meetings, sub-committee meetings, and occasional events.
Remuneration: Voluntary (expenses reimbursed)

Sebastian’s Action Trust supports families of children and young people whose life expectancy is uncertain, helping them live life to the full. We are seeking dynamic and skilled individuals to join our Board of Trustees. This is your opportunity to contribute your expertise to a small, dedicated team, working with a charity that supports families facing some of life’s toughest challenges.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Trustee with expertise in charity law, you will play a critical role in ensuring the charity operates within its legal and regulatory framework. Working collaboratively with fellow Trustees and the executive team, you will help uphold the highest standards of governance, transparency, and compliance while contributing to the strategic direction of the organisation.
Your legal expertise will be instrumental in guiding the charity through complex legal matters, ensuring adherence to the Charities Act, safeguarding policies, and other applicable regulations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Governance and Compliance:
-Ensure the charity complies with all legal and regulatory requirements, including those set out by the Charity Commission and Companies House.
-Provide guidance on legal matters such as charity law, contracts, policies, and risk management.
-Assist in reviewing and updating governance documents, including the Articles of Association.
Strategic Leadership:
-Work with fellow Trustees to shape the charity’s long-term strategy and ensure alignment with its mission and values.
-Support and challenge the executive team to ensure effective decision-making and risk management.
Oversight and Risk Management:
-Review and assess the charity’s risk management framework to ensure potential legal and regulatory risks are identified and mitigated.
-Oversee compliance with safeguarding, data protection, and other key regulatory requirements.
Board Contribution:
-Attend and actively participate in Board and sub-committee meetings.
-Collaborate with other Trustees to ensure the charity is well-governed and financially sustainable.
-Act as an ambassador for the charity, promoting its work and strengthening relationships with external stakeholders.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Ideal Skills and Experience:
-A qualified solicitor, barrister, or legal professional with expertise in charity law.
-Strong understanding of governance and compliance requirements for UK charities, including the Charities Act and associated regulations.
-Experience advising organisations on legal matters, particularly in the non-profit sector.
-Strategic thinker with problem-solving skills.
Additional desirable Skills and Experience:
-Previous experience serving as a Trustee or on a Board of directors.
-Familiarity with other legal areas such as contracts, employment law, or data protection.
-Well-connected locally, with the ability to foster partnerships and expand the charity’s network.
