What is the job?
Thorlabs Ltd designs, manufactures and ships a diverse product portfolio ranging from small mechanical items of a few grams to optical tables weighing more than 1 Ton. Our business model means we are a high mix low volume manufacturer, which presents challenging packaging requirements. A new position is being opened for a Packaging & Process engineer which will be responsible for designing and optimising packaging processes using Lean techniques within our supply chain, manufacturing facility and distribution network.
Working Hours: Monday to Friday 8.00 am – 4.30 pm (Hybrid working available)

We use these products in manufacturing and research, from fibre optics to piezo motors. We are the gold standard with optics laboratories worldwide. There are now 22 facilities across the world in 9 countries. Here in Ely, we are responsible for the Motion Control and Optical Tables product line.
Where you will be working?
It’s a hybrid role, working in our new purpose-built facility in Witchford, Ely as well as your home. Our purpose-built facility is just 12 miles from Cambridge, within the beautiful mediaeval city of Ely. There are train and bus links to Ely from Kings Cross and Liverpool Street London, and our site is within distance of Ely train station and Ely Bus station.
Requirements
What is essential to us…
* Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field or equivalent experience or qualifications.
* Minimum 2 years experience in a similar field.
* Proven experience in process improvement and implementation, including A3 problem-solving approach.
* Working knowledge of Lean principles and methodology
* Knowledge of and experience with mechanical and electronic assembly techniques.
* Ability to interpret mechanical/engineering and assembly drawings.
* Understanding of packaging materials, design principles, and manufacturing processes
* Proven critical thinking and problem-solving skills
* Experience with packaging equipment operation
* Data analysis and problem-solving
* Self starter, ability to manage multiple projects at one time
* Knowledge of relevant industry regulations and quality standards
What we would like you to do/ to see…
* Use CAD platforms such as Kasemake & Solid Works to design packaging for new and existing products.
* Implement process improvements in the full packaging value stream, being a key partner with our production teams.
* Evaluate existing packaging designs & processes for potential improvements in safety, functionality, cost, and sustainability.
* Select appropriate packaging materials based on product requirements and industry standards.
* Manage BOM data though MRP systems.
* Develop packaging specifications and testing protocols to ensure quality standards are met.
* Analyse current packaging processes to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement.
* Implement process changes to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and minimise downtime.
* Evaluate and implement new packaging equipment.
* Investigate packaging-related quality issues and implement corrective actions.
* Work closely with cross-functional stakeholders including vendors, production, R&D, RMA and Logistics.
* Document packaging processes and procedures to ensure consistency.
* Collaborate directly with our component vendor base to ensure packaging used is fit for purpose and sustainable.
