Bournemouth School for Girls is an 11-18 selective girls’ Grammar School and Sixth Form in the heart of Bournemouth. BSG currently has 1268 students on roll which includes those in our Sixth Form. It provides students with extensive academic and extra-curricular activities from Year 7 to Year 13 (the majority of students remain in the school for 6th form study). The school is academically successful and is 8th highest in England’s Southwest region according to the latest Sunday Times Parent Power Survey. The school was inspected by Ofsted in May 2024 and judged to be outstanding in all areas. The inspectors summarised the ethos and atmosphere of the school as follows; “Bournemouth School for Girls is a joyous place. Pupils flourish academically and socially. They are passionate about their learning and embrace the multitude of wider development opportunities that the school provides.”
The school’s vision is: ‘ The Best for Our Students, The Best from Our Students’ and the curriculum in place ensures that students are provided with the best opportunities to prepare them for their future.
We are seeking an academically driven and inspirational Head of MFL to lead our high-achieving department. All three languages are taught through to A Level with high achievement at both GCSE and A Level and we are looking for a passionate linguist who can maintain and build on our success.
Our dynamic department thrives on collaboration, with teachers bringing their own expertise and enthusiasm to their subjects. We value innovative teaching, the sharing of ideas and a commitment to fostering a love of languages in our students. To this end, a core principle of the department is to deliver lessons in the target language and pupils are encouraged to use the target language themselves in class. As Head of MFL, you will lead a well-established team that works closely together, ensuring excellence in teaching and learning through all the key stages.
Linguistic competitions, theatre trips and summer study programmes are ways in which we enhance and develop the experience of language learning for our students. We also have two long standing trips abroad: a residential trip for year 8 to Normandy and a German exchange for year 10 with a school just outside Frankfurt. Both of these trips are very popular and over-subscribed.
We have French, German and Spanish MLAs to assist with developing spontaneous conversation skills with our GCSE and A Level students.
This is an exciting opportunity for an inspirational practitioner and dedicated leader who is committed to academic excellence and keen to inspire the next generation of linguists. If you have the vision and expertise to drive our department forward, we would love to hear from you.
